What day is it again?!?

I'm SO messed up this week. With the holiday on Monday, yesterday felt like Wednesday (hence no Thursday Kitties, but a meme instead), but today was so long, I thought it was Saturday!
Today was a day of Kindergarten awards, airport runs and a stop at Joann's. I want to do a craft with Baby Girl's class on Monday and I needed to pick up some supplies. Two hours later we left. That store is dangerous when it's just me, but add in the kids, well lets just say they have lots of crafts to do this summer (which will be done in the first week), a new sweater each (did you know that the Lionbrand superwash wool was on clearance?!!? But no Sock Ease yet) and some new shorts and sleep pants (all for me to make). Thank goodness for clearance sales, coupons and 30% off sales.....

While I'm slowly cranking along on my Maizy sock (have I mentioned how much I dislike 2.25mm needles?!?) I started making some hats for Kristy. She is going to the Ukraine in Sept/Oct with a church group and they will be bringing knit hats to the kids there. Her goal is 300. Since I'm a sucker for charities where my stuff will directly get to where it needs to go, AND I have 2 hats just waiting for a new home, I figured this was for me. Two hats seemed lonely and since I was needing a mindless knit (knitting with size 1 needles is NOT mindless knitting, even with stockinette socks) I cast on some wool yarn and made this

which fits a 6 y/o

and this

which fits a 9 y/o (but since it wasn't *his color*, he wouldnt model it. So my ball winder will have to do.) I have one more on the needles before I take a hat break. These are basic rolled brim hats using different wools in various weights I got on eBay. I have to say they came out better than I thought, esp the one Baby Girl is wearing. We'll see if I can crank out anymore before I mail it out in Aug. Seems doable, but I keep seeing my project list grow by the day.....

Monday Meme and more!

There are a couple of memes floating around in blogland so I figure I'd do one today and one tomorrow.

First one:

The rules: There are no rules when I play. If you want to play, leave me a comment so I can read yours on your blog.

1. What was I doing 10 years ago?
I was pregnant with #1 Son and trying to finish up some projects in our house before he was born. This was harder than I expected since I was nauseous every day of my pregnancy. Craftwise I was still predominantly doing cross stitch. I had a small fabric stash because I was slowly getting into quilting, but my yarn stash was maybe a few balls of yarn left over from a couple of projects I did when living in NY.

2. What are 5 things on my to-do list today - in no particular order?
Laundry, work on the quilt for Baby Girl's teacher, work on some baby socks for a gift, make dinner, go on line. I'm proud to say I did everything on that list including finishing those socks!

3. Snacks I enjoy
Popcorn, icecream, chocolate.

4. Places I've lived
Miami, Ft Lauderdale, Orlando, Long Island

5. Things I would do if I were a billionaire
First I would make sure my family was taken care of. No bills, no house payment, college paid, travel accts, etc. Buying a compound (like the Kennedy's) where we could all meet up and go to for family reunions sounds really nice. Then I'd like to set up a private foundation to help those that fall thru cracks, something like Habitat for Humanity. Help people rebuild after major disasters, but make them be a part of it.

6. Peeps I want to know more about
If you read this blog, this would be YOU!!!

Now for those of you who have read this meme and wonder when I'm going to post a picture of those socks, wait no more.

They are basic ribbed socks size 6-12mo. The yarn is Sassy Stripes by Moda Dea. If they look familiar, its because I made a pair for my nephew using the same yarn. The best part? MY TOES MATCH!!!!

And here is a shot of the quilt I'm working on. SOO close to being done. I just need to add the class picture and 2 more kids' blocks. Then I will baste it and quilt it. I'm hoping to be done by Friday.........

The eagle has landed

right into your computer! Go check out this website

Eagles Nest Live

Its live video showing an eagle and the babies that just hatched. Most of the time there is at least one eagle parent there (sometimes two), but if there is none, check out the 2 grey blobs, those are the babies!!! VERY cool website!!

Don't Box Me In!

What IS it with cats and boxes?!?

I do TOO fit!!

You weren't planning on using the picture for the puzzle, were you?

Spongebob, I think I hear Plankton!

Let them keep their boxes, I prefer the space of a closet!

Wednesday WIPs

Today has actually been a nice day. The kids were in school, the IO was at work, and I was home.

With the quiet.

Oh how LOVELY that was!!!! With school almost over, there will be few days (if any!) of quiet until Aug.

I took this opportunity to work on the quilt for Baby Girl's teacher. I have less than 2 weeks to finish it. It WILL get done.

I also took updated project pics. Here is a before pic of my Seasonal Spring.

and one after meeting up with my stitching group.

Thank goodness for this group, it seems its the only time I get to actually stitch these days.

Here is a before pic of Baby Girl's tank dress

and after

I pulled it out 2 days ago and have been trying to make a dent in it. It also shows the difference in the dye lots. Thankfully it doesn't look so distinct in person.

And while we're updating, lets throw in some pics of the garden.
Our beans

corn

and squash

Now that the kids are home and the IO will be home any minute, the quiet is gone, but it was nice while it lasted......

Monday Morning Update

Alrighty then......last week was quite busy.

We had a Mother/Son dance

Saturday night skies (click to see the moon better)

and 8pm heat

Dress rehearsals

and the afterglow of a great performance

Some things were harder than anticipated while others were easier. Either way, it is OVER! and I can take a breath. There are less than 14 school days left and then we can start summer. Thank goodness the library offers free activities!!

Hopefully I will have something (anything!) crafty to show later on in the week. Cuz right now I've got bupkis.

Wool Hats on a Warm Day

Remember when I was Kool Aid dyeing some hats? Well I realized I never did post the finished products.

Here is the adult sized one

dyed with cherry Kool Aid,

and the one for a 6-8y/o

dyed with orange Kool Aid.

I really am lazy when it comes to dyeing with the Kool Aid. It's recommended that you dye the yarn first before you knit with it. This way the yarn is evenly saturated and comes out pretty uniform. Me, I knit up the product first, then dump it into the pot with the Kool Aid, nuke it until it soaks up all the color and then let it cool. The next day I wash it in shampoo and once its dry, it goes into the charity pile. The orange one has some mottled colored areas, but I think they came out great. I'm not sure who will end up with them yet, but they are in the wool pile waiting for their new home.

What's on the needles now? Socks of course!

I'm using the Maizy yarn to make some ankle socks. I think I may have made the heel flap a bit bigger than I should have but I think it will be ok. I'm knitting on size 1s and boy is it taking FOREVER! I so prefer using size 2 dpns.

Tomorrow I'm meeting up with my stitching group so hopefully on Friday I'll have an updated picture of my Seasonal Spring project.

Sock Yarn Rules!!

With socks and sock yarn being on my mind lately, I decided to pull out the sock yarn and actually see what I have.

I'm a brave woman.

Not as bad as I thought.

With all the stash enhancing lately I wanted to get a handle on what I had. So I organized into brands. Then I counted.

Yikes.

Including the pair of socks that I'm knitting on right now, I have (cough, cough) 91 skeins of sock yarn.

Worse than I thought.

The good thing abt this is that I'm seeing some yarn that I forgot I had and plan on keeping close to work on. And it also showed me some yarn that made me think I was high on wool when I bought it. I've taken pictures of everything and will post on Ravelry (eventually) and will probably put some up for trade there as well.

I can use some of this if you don't want it.

Hemi, that's not the pile I'm thinking of. Now step away from the yarn.

Saturday Sky

I took this at 11:30AM and it's already 88. Explains why the cats are sleeping inside instead of out.

And I've also decided that I need to scale back with my schedule. Last week was crazy and I can't keep up the pace. I'm only going to do what HAS to be done, not what would be nice to do. It's amazing to me how much you can get done in your mind, but reality takes SO much longer.

Plus by the end of the day I'm too tired to stitch or knit. I think THAT is the part I'm not liking. So today the IO is dropping Baby Girl off at her rehearsal (they don't want parents staying today since all the dancers will be present and it will be packed). And I'm not going to the baby shower. I really should but I just don't have the energy or the desire to go. She's due in July so if I get her my gift before then I'll be happy. Plus that will give me time to cast on for another pair of socks and actually make those blankets. Later we need to pick up the red van and then I think I'm going to stop off at my LYS. According to their website, they have new Alpaca sock yarn in and I want to check it out. Nothing like buying new yarn to get the creative juices flowing.

Meanwhile I'm going to hunker down in a dark cold bedroom and get caught up on some mindless tv watching.........

Edited to add:
Well I never did get to hunker into that dark cold room. Instead ballet ran long and I had to pick up Baby Girl. And since I was out and dressed, I stopped at Knit N Needle Nook. I felt the need to be surrounded by color and away from children. I checked out her new alpaca yarn and it was nice!

See?

And of course the longer I was there, the more I saw. So I got some of this.

It's Gedifra yarn and while it wasnt something I normally would have picked out, what caught my eye was the finished sock on the label. LOVE it so had to pick some up.

And they only had one skein of this, but I liked it and I can add different colored toes and heels ~or~ I can save them for kid socks. They'd be perfect for a boy.

Now that we're at this temp at almost 7pm

I think I WILL hunker down into that cool dark bedroom and play with some yarn.
