Saturday Sky

Without my royal palms to frame my picture, its a tough decision where to take my Saturday sky.  Nothing makes me happy.  This one seems to have won out.

and our weather forecast for the rest of the week.

I'm not happy abt the high 70s, but I'll take what I can get.  Then again who else can say they can ring in the new year at the beach in a bathing suit??  I wont be doing it, but I could!

I've been making progress on my sock, moreso than I usually do.  I've taken a picture every day since I started it around the same time each day.  This is what I've got......
12/26

12/27

12/28

12/29

I'm NEVER this far along in a sock so quickly, but the stripes in the sock keep me going.  I'm just abt finished with the gusset and hope to be close to the toe decreases by my next picture tomorrow.

Hope everybody's having a fabulous Saturday!

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...

It's a warm day, around 70 degrees.  Normally I wouldnt think it was warm but between the humidity and working around the house, I feel warm!

I am thinking...
of taking a break.  I think I bit off more than I wanted to chew today.  Baby Girl has been sleeping with me (the IO roams alot at night) and she's taken to using the matress pad as a blanket.  I decided to strip the bed and wash everything but that included taking everything off the foot of the bed (I tend to pile things there) and put things away which ended up being more than I expected.

I am thankful...
for a clean family room.  The IO has been going crazy in there the past couple of days, going thru piles, getting rid of junk, redoing the area where the TV lives.  It's putting the rest of the house to shame.  Hence my project in the bedroom.....

In the kitchen...
I'm about to start dinner.  Tonight's meal will consist of Grandma's Chicken (stewed chicken my grandmother used to make) with rice, corn and peas.  Maybe brownies for dessert.

I am wearing...
A t-shirt, shorts and sneakers.  My heel has been bothering me lately and the wood floors just aggrevate it.

I am creating...
Huh.  Not sure how to answer this one.  I finished Baby Girl's poncho but neither one of us likes it.  Here is what it looks like.

Yes I know, it's just a rectangle, but that was the pattern for this one.  We tried attaching it in different ways, but it's just not working.  I'm realizing that the yarn is just too thick for what we're looking for.  Baby Girl feels REALLY bad that I did all that work (twice!) and yet she still doesnt like it.  I told her not to worry abt it, that happens sometimes.  It can look great in a picture but not work in real life.  Cautionary tale for many things in life!!!  She still wants a poncho but like the one I made her before.  I need to see how much of the Sassy Stripes I still have left to make her the same kind, just bigger.

As far as the above, I'm not ripping it out again.  It is what it is and will become a cat blanket.  I have no desire to rip it out again, the yarn couldnt handle it.  It's time to move on.

I am going...
to look thru my yarn to start a new project.  I have the scarf started and I have my afghan in progress but there was a cowl that I really liked and I really need to start on another pair of socks.  My needles look lonely.

I am wondering...
why I started such a big project today.  SO not in the mood for it, BUT it's forcing me to finish the laundry including folding it and putting it away.

I am reading...
Fan Fiction.  I just dont have the mind for much more at night.  And what I'm reading is 2000 words or less.  Short stories are perfect late at night for my attention span.

I am hoping...
the IO starts working soon.  His last contract ended Nov 30th but with the holidays the jobs aren't in high demand.  He's heard from Darden, Disney and Nascar, but we need to wait for the bigshots to come back from vaca to make the decisions.  We're hoping by next week we'll start hearing more.

I am looking forward to...
a quiet rest of the week.

I am learning
that not all yarn works well with all projects.

Around the house...
The family room looks great but the rest of the house is bad.  Esp the living room.  Many things relocated there while the family room was being worked on.

I am pondering...
the ability to have a totally clean house at one time w/o hiring a maid.  (I ponder this a LOT!)

A favorite quote for today...
Saw this a few times on Facebook the past couple of days.

I dont want to brag or anything, but this is like the fifth end of the world I've survived.

One of my favorite things...

He always seems to win this spot.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Drop off some clothes to a couple of friends of mine who have kids younger than mine.  Need to get rid of SOME extra stuff that's hanging around!

A peek into my day...

He's my laundry supervisor.....

Rounding Third

One more week and the year is over.  Weird. And apparently the Mayans were wrong.   Yet *another* end of world apocalypse that I've survived.  This bodes well for the upcoming zombie one.

We keep things simple here around the holidays, which means that while alot of you were running around like crazy, we were having a nice quiet day (well as quiet as we can have with all of us home).  Baby Girl and I  were going to deliver the kitty blankets to the shelter today, but I think they shut down.  When I went to look for the number to check if it was open today, I couldnt find it.  I tried leaving messages at a few other shelters but everybody is closed for the holidays. I'll find out more the first week of Jan.

Meanwhile I've been getting caught up with blog reading, organizing my Ravelry notebook, and figuring out how much yarn I've used up this year.  I need to weigh a couple of projects but I cant find the scale.  Once I do that I'll be writing an end of the year post.

Since we never ended up leaving the house, I had Baby Girl make some cupcakes.  She was REALLY disappointed we couldnt go to the shelter so this was a good distraction.  They turned out really well too!

Of course #1 Son had to jazz his up a bit.

Usually it's Baby Girl who likes the bling, but she prefers her cupcakes to have less sprinkles than more.

Craft wise I've finished Baby Girl's poncho, I just need to seam it up.   And I have started a scarf using my new Simply Soft yarn.  I was a bit burnt out from socks, but I can feel some of the sock mojo coming back.  I may have to play with some sock yarn to get a pair on the needles.....

No matter what you all have planned for the rest of the year, please stay safe.

Monday Morning Update

I've decide with all the insanity rampant in the world today, I'm going to switch gears and turn the tv off.  Instead I'm going to put on a stupid movie (The Wedding Date) , update this blog, catch up on blogreading and perhaps fold some laundry.

And yarn. Lots and lots of yarn.  I've purchased some.  I've won some.  I've been given some.  Now all I need to do is find a place to put it all.  Oh the drama!

Purchased:

Possible cowl for Baby Girl

Sweater for me

Most likely a scarf.  It was on sale and the last one left in the bin.  It looked lonely so I brought him home.

Given:

A fellow Raveler had some extra yarn she was trying to give to a good cause.  It will be used for some charity knitting.

Won:
Got from Sock a Month KAL

Projects:  I'm still working on my squares, made two more which now has me up to 35 squares.  However I've decided to make it a bit bigger than I originally thought so now I'm LESS than half done.  At this point I think I'm going to knit until there is no more yarn left and that will be the size of my blanket.

Baby Girl's poncho is also coming along but I've fallen a bit behind the schedule I set up for myself.  It's just hard to be motivated to work on a thick poncho when the weather has been near the 80s.  Where is my winter??  We had a couple of days this past week of clouds and mist and dampy coldness which honestly I didnt mind.  Today we are back up to 79.  I'm hoping Jan will be a bit cooler....

and the strangest of it all???  I have no socks on the needles.....Weird.

Saturday Sky

Poncho update:  I'm abt 20" in and it's true what they say, garter stitch eats up more yarn than stockinette stitch.  With the yarn I have, I'll be lucky to get 40" out of it.  Since Baby Girl is not that tall, I might be able to get away with the length.  We'll have to see.  Either way, I'm ahead of where I wanted to be with the poncho.

#1 Son update:  This is what a 14 y/o looks like.

I told him that I wanted something other than that canned smile so he decided to channel a super model!  He's a quirky kid that's for sure!!!!  And he's officially an inch taller than me, making him 5'5"!  He LOVES that part!!!!

Saturday sky update:  I went outside to get my picture and this is what I saw

BLUE sky with one big white piece of cotton stretched out over the house!!!  It was a very cool looking sky that is no where captured in this picture.

Speaking of pictures, I got a new camera but I'm not completely thrilled with it.  It's much better than my old one (more pixels, better zoom, it works!) but its a very thin, small camera.  My old one had more weight to it and I liked that.  I'm giving this one some time but it's VERY light and I have a harder time keeping it steady.

How's everybody's Saturday going??

A New Month

November was a very crazy month ending with a bang.   The IO was on his way home a few days ago when the transmission in his van gave out.  He added some transmission fluid that enabled him to get close to home before it completely died.  Our plan was to run this van into the ground, and apparently we have succeeded.  Thirteen years and 171,000+;  yep she served us well.

Now comes the part of finding another vehicle.  We havent had a car payment in a LONG time and I'm not looking forward to starting one.......

--------------------------------------------------------

Now that December has started and all the baby items that needed to be done are done, that leaves a variety of things to work on that fall into the WANT TO category.  Hmmmm, that turned into an overwhelming decision.  There are so many things I WANT to work on, but which to start first???  The one that ended up being picked was the one at the top of the want to pile.  Remember this project?

It was a good idea in theory but neither one of us liked it.  So a couple of weeks ago I unravelled it and a couple of days ago I started Baby Girl Poncho 2.0.  This is what I've got so far.

It's your typical basic poncho just like the last one I made her, except this time it's adult sized.  I have to knit for 60" which is a bit overwhelming, but I figure if I knit at least 2 inches a day, I'll be done by the end of Dec.  Which means she'll be able to wear it this winter.  Incentive to work on it every day because I'd love to be done with it sooner.  The yarn is bulky so it's not that bad, abt 6 rows to an inch.  It SOUNDS easy and completely doable,  yet I still had to get caught up last night.  I'm hoping to get ahead of the game later tonight.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...
It's a sunny day at around 72 outside.  The weather is highs in the 70s, lows in the 50s all week.  My kind of weather!

I am thinking...
That instead of trying to get caught up, I'm starting fresh.  Too much to catch up on. My calendar from the past few months is just nuts.  Things seem to be slowing down a bit and I'm going to embrace that.

I am thankful...
for the downtime.

In the kitchen...
not alot going on until I completely get all dishes done.  It seems that there are always dishes in the sink or on the counters.  Sometimes I'm winning but it seems lately there are more dishes on the counters than in my cabinets.   And in the interest of eating more at home (and cutting back on spending so much on fast food)  I'm trying to cook the entire week.  Yesterday we had burgers with mushrooms, cheese and bacon.  YUM!  Tonight will be spaghetti.  Tomorrow night will be a tough one since we have something going on at night and Pizza Hut has $.50 wings.......

I am wearing...
a t-shirt and pajama bottoms.  I did have on some socks, but I was getting too warm.

I am creating...
I'm back to my blanket squares.  I just finished the latest blue squares and am just abt to start some purple ones.  I counted all the squares again and I have 34.    that's only abt half way done.  I need to make at least 64 for a 5" square blanket.  And I'd like it bigger.

I am going...

to the school later on today.  I was hoping to avoid any school related errands this week, but we got a call from Yankee Candle yesterday to say the shipment would be made TODAY!  Nothing like a head's up! I just need to sign for the delivery (it has to be somebody from PTA)  and I was the girl standing there when we were informed.   Not a big deal but it will require me to actually get dressed.

I am wondering...
where the mouse is for this computer.  It's MIA and it's making me nuts having to use the touch pad.

I am reading...
I started reading a book when we went to NC over the Thanksgiving break called Espresso Shot.  I like the story, but not fond of the woman's style of writing.

I am hoping...
I find the mouse soon.

I am looking forward to...
Saturday.  The IO and I are planning a date night.  We havent had dinner alone in a LONG time.

I am learning...
I really need that mouse!

Around the house...
I'm slowly starting to get caught up.  I did 3 loads of laundry yesterday (washed, dried, folded AND put away!) and got rid of one more Target sized bag of clothes.   Before our trip to NC we discovered that all the long sleeeved shirts from last year did not fit Baby Girl this year so they got put into a bag and I passed them on to the nurse at the elementary school.  It's really sad how many kids dont have the proper clothing for our cold days.  Granted we dont stay cold for long periods of time but we do get our days when a jacket or a long sleeved shirt is necessary.  Our nurse at the school passes them on to the kids who really need them.

I am pondering...
how I can be so tired when I've already had a cup of coffee.....

A favorite quote for today...
To err is human, to really mess things up requires a computer.

One of my favorite things...
an orange bundle of fur sleeping next to me, his twitched giving away his dream status.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Princess will be going back to the vet on Friday.  She has issues with her teeth that come and go, but last Friday her mouth was so bad she couldnt eat (which for Princess is a sure sign of a problem!)  She got an anti inflam and an antibiotic shot to alleviate the puffiness in her gums and we go back on Friday to re evaluate her teeth.   We will be scheduling a teeth cleaning but need to see if any need to be pulled.

A peek into my day...
This is a picture my sister in law took of her kids.   The pink socks are the ones I made for my niece.  I finished the socks a couple of nights before we left to NC and I forgot to take a picture of them.  This is the best I've got.

There you have it.  If you want to play, here is the link  The Simple Woman's Daybook

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...It is gorgeous!  Right now it's 59 degrees and sunny.  We expect a high only of 70.  LOVE this weather!!  Wish it happened more often.

I am thinking...abt what my schedule is for today.

I am thankful...that the election is over!

In the kitchen...I will be having a family dinner this wknd.  The turkey is defrosting in the fridge and I need to dig out the rest of my aunt's recipes.   For those of you who are wondering why I'm not waiting another week for Thanksgiving, well those who know me know I buck the system.  I dont need a national holiday to get my family together or to give thanks.

I am wearing...a San Diego zoo tee, sleep pants and a pair of hand knit socks.

I am creating...the 2nd sock for my niece.  I need to finish it soon since we will be seeing them in a week and a half......

I am going...to be at both schools today before I have to pick the kids up.

I am wondering...when I get a day off.  I think I need to schedule one in........

I am reading...The Body in the Boudoir by Katherine Hall Page.  I used to read her a long time ago and really enjoy her books.  This series is abt a caterer who solves mysteries.

I am hoping...the lost doggie we saw yesterday was reunited with their owner.

I am looking forward to...a day with nothing scheduled.

Around the house...I dropped off 3 bags of clothes to the local thrift drop off and 2 bags to the elementary school.  I have 2 more bags to give to some friends and 4 more bags of fabric to pass on to another friend.    #1 Son wants to redo his room so maybe we'll work on that during thanksgiving break.

I am pondering...the logistics of wanting a day of nothing scheduled and yet continuing to fill up my days with planned events

A favorite quote for today...I found this on facebook and it's quite accurate......

One of my favorite things...the sounds of an empty house.  When you dont get it very often, it's WONDERFUL!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  watching Baby Girl receive her Student of the Month award later today and then going to the middle school to help with cookie dough distribution.  Thursday and Friday will be used to try and clean up this house for a turkey dinner on Saturday (will try to find the fine linens as well)

A peek into my day...
SO proud of my Baby Girl!  She was Student of the Month for her grade!!

Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...Beautiful!!!  Cold this AM (around 48) and we even broke temp records in Daytona Beach, but it warmed up to high 60s.  We'll be back to a high of 80 by the wknd.

I am thinking...that I need to knit up more hats.  It seems the ones that I like for me are the ones that seem to be used most by others in this house!

I am thankful...that we missed the brunt of Sandy but sad that there was so much damage to the northeast.

In the kitchen...bacon mushroom cheeseburgers for dinner tonight.  I was told they were the best burgers I ever made.  Not sure if it's because of the bacon or the soft white buns but I'll be using this combo again!

I am wearing...t-shirt, sweats and handknit socks that no longer fit #1 Son.

I am creating...I'm not so much creating as I am organizing (sort of).  I FINALLY got rid of those 5 garbage bags full of fabric.  Instead there are now 2 bags of fabric in my craft room and 4 white trash bags of fabric on my craft table in the living room.  It's still in my house but moving closer to moving out!  I got 6 more bags of clothes that will be relocating soon too;  some to the school, some to friends and a couple to Goodwill.

I am going...crazy trying to find the time to get rid of all this extra stuff.  I've been calling around looking for helpers for the upcoming memorial services this Saturday.  For the most part it's coming along, but it still amazes me how opinionated some ppl can get.

I am wondering...why ppl go out in the middle of a superstorm.  Makes me angry and sad at the same time when I hear somebody died because they were looking at the sites or out for a walk.

I am reading...knitting patterns.  I was at a stand still but ever since we've had this cold snap it's got me itching to start all kinds of projects!!!!  I moved my afghan squares to the car but I'm never in line long enough to make a dent.  I need to start more in the house.

I am hoping...Saturday goes smoothly......

I am looking forward to...Monday.

I am learning...that patience is important.

Around the house...my living room is slowly looking like a living room again.  I really want my house to be in some kind of order because a lot of old friends are coming up this wknd for the memorial services and I'd like a flat surface for them to sit on.  However I may have to settle for a clean kitchen and bathroom.

I am pondering...if I will ever have a totally clean house at one time.  I dont see it ever happening while I have kids.

A favorite quote for today.. We can complain because rose bushes have thorns or rejoice because thorn bushes have roses. - Abraham Lincoln

I prefer to rejoice.

One of my favorite things...is the warm body of a purring kitty next to me. (yes it is Hemi)

A few plans for the rest of the week:  finishing up the rest of the details of the memorial services of a dear family friend.  PTO meetings, and the collecting of funds for a fundraiser.

A peek into my day...

Saturday Stash

Not only did I take a picture of my sky but I'm actually going to post it today!!!!

It took me a second, but then I realized something.  My sky looked different.  Do you see the difference??

Go here to see it.

I'm hoping they were removed because they were diseased and NOT because they were unwanted.

I double checked, and it seems that I've posted on Facebook, Ravelry and Sock A Month, but I havent posted here.   I finished Samuel's socks!

I really like the way they came out.  I used Regia Design Line Kaffe Fassett color #04251.   48 stitches on size 2.5mm needles.  Cuff is 3.5" of 3x1 rub and .5"of stst.  Foot is 6.5" before toe decreases.  It's my basic sock;  the one I go to all the time.  This should fit a child between 7 & 8.

I've started another pair of socks for his sister.

Lorna's Laces Sport Weight.  I just started the heel.

We went to Joann's the other day to pick up some spray paints for #1 Son.  Ever since he saw a street artist in NYC, he's been itching to try the same thing.  Here is his painting.

He used a piece of plywood that is abt 3' x 5'.  I think he did a fantastic job!!!!  Now we just need to find a place to hang it.  If we ever finish off the garage, it would be PERFECT in there!  I'm having a tough time finding wall space.......

Of course I needed to look around to see what was on sale and I found this

Its really soft and I plan on making a cowl with it.

One of the problems I have with the Big Box stores is never finding enough of the same lot number for a project.  I really want to make a sweater, but they never seem to carry more than 8 skeins.  And even then they arent guaranteed to be the same dye lot.  However this time I lucked out.  I found some WoolEase in Cranberry and they had 12 skeins of the same lot number!!!!

WOOHOO!!  I bought all they had!  I've never seen this before and not sure I ever will so while I dont have a project in mind just yet, I WILL be knitting up a sweater with this yarn!!!!  With the weather cooling down *just a bit* I will need to start it soon if I want to wear it in Jan.

And if that weren't enough, I bought some fabric to line Baby Girl's dresser drawers.

I cut those out today and she's moved all her clothes back into her original dresser.  We were given another dresser with a mirror and while it had more drawers, they are MUCH smaller and all her clothes could not fit.  We're back to what we originally had and it's SO much better!  We also picked out the fabric for new drapes but that will have to be for another day.   It was bad enough I spent this money after the week I've had!  But sometimes you gotta get a little softness after reality hits you in the face.

Would you recognize yourself?

I needed to get new tires last week.  Once they were put on, I was happy.  I mean, REALLY happy!  They were pretty to me.  The next day when I took the rugrats to school I looked at them again and they made me smile.  Then I shook my head.  How on earth do new tires make me happy?  When did THAT happen??

I know the logical reason behind it, but sometimes I wonder what my 20 y/o  self would think abt this.  Or abt me for that matter.  I knew I wanted to be married and have kids.  Check.  That would be no surprise.  Having a messy house is no surprise since I always had a messy bedroom.  (while I had HOPED to be neater in my *old age*,  my mess would be a bit of a disappointment, but not a surprise).

However.

What happened to my long hair????  Where are my freshly manicured nails??  How did I get so FAT?!?  You get excited abt tires????  You garden???  I dont go to new restaurants any more.  I'm not the first to see movies in my peer group.  I dont drive a nice car.  I think my 20 y/o self would just implode.

This is why there is no time travel.

With all that being said, there is something that has stayed the same.  My desire to craft.  I always enjoyed it growing up.  I remember making a loom when I was in elementary school.  My mom taught me to knit and I made a couple of squares for a blanket.  I took up hook rugging.  I scrapbooked my photo albums before it was popular (yet now I dont do it at all).   I made a couple of collages with pictures I'd cut out from magazines.  What pushed me over the edge was learning to cross stitch.  That paved the way to quilting and then knitting again.

So while my 45 y/o self would implode my 20 y/o self, I'm okay with that.  But it does  make me wonder what my 70 y/o self would do to me now..........

So what would implode your 20 y/o self?  And for those younger readers divide your age in half and go from there.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Since I dont like posting w/o a picture of some sort,  here is a picture of the farm we went to with the corn maze and hay rides.
click to make bigger to see the house better.....

I'll be posting more on this later this week.

BTW Tiger came by AGAIN today and looked like she wanted to come inside!  When I opened the door she took off, but I have hope she'll visit more often......

A Visit From an Old Friend

Remember Tiger?

I dont post pictures of her anymore because she doesnt live here anymore.  She moved out almost a year ago.  Apparently the house was too crowded with cats and noise so she left.  I know some of you think I'm kidding, but I'm not. She lives 2 houses down now, but every once in awhile she stops by for a visit.  It usually involves me being outside in the AM and cooler weather.  Yesterday was such a day.  The cold front we were expecting (cold front = high of 85 this time around) came thru and the morning was beautiful.  After finding ourselves stranded by my flat tire, Baby Girl and I stood near the tire hoping if we stared at it long enough, it would instantaneously reinflate (it did not).  I heard a meow that sounded familiar and I turned around.  On the property line sat Tiger!  She wont cross it (funny how she knows where it is, but humans need to measure) so I have to approach her.  She seemed genuinely happy to see us.  She let me pet her for a little bit and then she let Baby Girl do the same thing.  Then she sat abt 4 feet away and looked at us while purring.  We chatted back and forth and when she was done, she got up and went back home.

At first I was SO happy to see her.  She's doing well and looks great.  Now it just makes me miss her again.  But what can I expect?  This is proof positive cats are their own entities......

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...
Darkness.  This is the first time I've actually stopped today.  Between finding a place for the upcoming repast, trying and then failing to fix a flat tire (we thought it was a slow leak so we used fix a flat last night.  It was flat again this AM) and having my septic tank back up, my week has been crazy.  And it's only Tues!  Repast location as been reserved, septic tank has been pumped, but tire is still flat.....

I am thinking...
how I need a vacation.  A few of us moms were talking abt this over the wknd.  It seems life has gone from craziness to insanity.  A friend of mine has been renovating her house and she is in the process of her kitchen AND her bathroom.  Yes she is crazy.  It wasnt supposed to be at the same time, it just worked out that way.  We are all waiting to become bored housewives, but it just never seems to happen.

I am thankful...
that I have a working toilet.

In the kitchen...
Not a whole lot.  However I do plan on roasting a chicken for dinner tomorrow night.  Fast food is getting old REALLY fast.

I am wearing...
Grey shorts and a grey t-shirt. Didnt plan it that way, it's what was clean.

I am creating...
only one thing at the moment.  I'm back to working on my afghan.  Samuel's socks are done and while I want to start a pair for his sister, I haven't had time to cast on.

I am going...
to the middle school tomorrow.  Apparently I am the chairperson for the fundraiser that was due today.  I signed up to volunteer.  NOT chair.  But since nobody else volunteered that meant that I was running it.  I found this out today.  Makes me worry abt the spring fundraiser since there are only two of us for that one.....

I am wondering...
how I get myself in these messes!

I am reading...
sadly, nothing.  But I have 4 library books that I've renewed twice.  Wonder if third time's a charm?

I am hoping...
for some quiet.

I am looking forward to...
This wknd.  I've got nothing specific planned and I intend to keep it that way.  We had fun last wknd (more on that tomorrow) but it's time to dial it down a notch.

I am learning
I will never be skinny.

Around the house...
the latest demolition project was the swing.  It was getting dangerous to play on so the IO took it down.  Only one piece has been removed from the back yard.

I am pondering...
if anybody is still reading this.

One of my favorite things...
right now is dark chocolate peanut M&Ms.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Other than tomorrow,  I'm hoping nothing.  There is no school on Friday so there will be sleeping in enjoyed by most!!! (the IO still has to go to work)

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...
It is cloudy and I'm LOVING it!!!  We've got a cool front going thru, which means the highs will be in the 80s instead of the 90s, and, most importantly, the humidity will drop!!!  Fall is here! (Florida style)

I am thinking...
that I need a new vacuum cleaner.  The IO took BOTH vacuum cleaners out to the garage (still with no door) and they are covered in sawdust.  I refuse to clean the vacuum cleaners before I clean the house.  We will live in filth one more day.

I am thankful...
that the kids are finally starting to get better.  Baby Girl is just about back to 100%, and #1 Son is getting close.  He still has a headache in the AM, but that's from his sinuses.  I'm thinking of adding a humidifier/air cleaner to his room to make it easier on him in the AM.  I know we have one around but if the IO got to it, I'm better off getting a new one.

In the kitchen...
Our local grocery store is wonderful.  It's my favorite one of all the stores I've been in.  It's clean, the ppl are friendly and helpful and for the most part the shelves are stocked.  They have what is called Apron Recipes and every day around dinner they have samples of their latest recipe.  This is what tonight's dinner will be.

Country Fried Steak
This is a TRUE country meal.  Still makes me laugh how I had to move north to live in the South.

I am wearing...
Baggy blue t-shirt and grey shorts.  Basically my PJs that I have yet to change out of.

I am creating...
the second sock for Samuel.  I'm almost done with the foot and will be starting the toe decreases.  I weighed the ball of yarn left over from the skein and then I weighed the finished first sock.  I should have enough yarn with some to spare, but the more I look at the ball of yarn and think of what I have yet to do, it will be close.  I'm hoping to be done by the end of the week.

I am going...
nowhere today!  Other than picking up the kids from school, I dont plan on leaving the house.  It's been a long time since I've done that!

I am wondering...
what project to tackle first.  I have so many ongoing projects that need to be done and then there are the ones I want to do.  Just not sure what to tackle first.  Well I was going to tackle a project that reqiured a vacuum cleaner, but that's been put on hold.  Guess I will continue on with laundry.

I am reading...
unfortunately, nothing.  This makes me a bit sad.  I've gone from books to blogs to fan fiction to nothing.  I really need to read during the day when everybody is in school/work since it's the only time I'm not interupted, but that's when I try to get caught up on TV shows that I love (watched the ABC comedy lineup this AM while eating breakfast and then folding laundry)  I really need to remedy that......

I am hoping...
that my bff will be able to deal with the life ahead of her.  Her dad is VERY close to hospice, she's going thru chemo, and her husband has been out of work for a year now.  Each one of those is a difficult thing to get thru, she's going thru them all at once.

I am looking forward to...
going to a corn maze this wknd.  Its the same group from last year and we should have a great time.

I am learning...
how quickly the house falls apart when I dont keep up on housework.

Around the house...
this is SUCH a loaded question.....

I am pondering...
how everybody is having something in their life to deal with.  Even my friends' kids who have just recently gotten married.  Life can be good, but life can be hard.

A favorite quote for today...
The internet is a lot like ancient Egypt, people writing one walls and worshiping cats.
Saw this on Facebook and it cracked me up!

One of my favorite things...
online games.  Right now it's what I find mindless and relaxing at the end of a taxing day.  Plus I can still play when answering where homework is, what we have for dessert or interupting a sibling fight.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Honestly not much and I'm loving it!  I think I have a PTO meeting on Friday and something else tomorrow but that may fall thru.  I need some quiet time in the house.

A peek into my day...

This is how Baby Girl went to school this morning.  There was no spirit week, no dressing crazy for the day.  We got the tights from JoAnn's along with the glasses and bow tie.  They were a Halloween costume if you wanted to dress as a nerd.  It cracks me up how being a nerd is cool.  She also put strips of duct tape on her jeans.  The duct tape had mustaches on them, again another cool thing.  So what does it say abt a child that goes to school like this??  And what does it say abt the mother who lets her????  She is weird but so is the gene pool.  And I love how she just doesnt care what ppl think.  And as long as she dresses appropriately (boobs are covered and so are butt cheeks) I really give her a lot of leeway.

So there you have it.  We got more at JoAnn's than just duct tape and crazy outfits which I will post abt tomorrow.  Meanwhile everybody enjoy your day!

Fourth Quarter of 2012

When I woke up Monday morning I thought of two things:

1:  How did I survive September?

2:  How on earth can it possibly be October?!?

October to me is the beginning of the end of the year.  Yes there are still three months, but very busy three months.

September was a month of sicknesses.  Sept 1st was the first time I went to Urgent Care with #1 Son and I've been back and forth with both kids ever since.  In fact they are both home today.  Sinus headaches abound!   I'm so glad they are smart kids or else they'd be having a hard time with grades.

I've had a friend start chemo, which ended up with her in the hospital after her first treatment with Broken Heart Syndrome.  It's where the top part of the heart doesnt pump and the bottom balloons out.  They just had a segment abt it on ABC Nightly News and she could have died from it.  Same friend's dad had a major stroke last week after a heart procedure and he's in the hospital with a 50/50 chance.  I told her to keep popping those xanax and I'd be over to teach her knitting.

Meanwhile the IO has taken over the garage.  He's been in a mind set of being *helpful* around the house.  This always scares me.  The good news is my garage is cleaned out.  I had to rescue some items from the trash, but for the most part, all the junk is gone.  I hardly have anything in there anymore.  The bad news is my a/c in my room was broken and replaced with one from the 1980s (the IO was fixing a perfectly working a/c, drilled thru something he shouldnt, almost burnt out the 2nd one, but all is fine now).    Oh and I no longer have a garage door.  He decided to disassemble it.  And make a new one.

Bets on how long it will be before I have one back up...........

October is turning into another busy month.  School events.  Fund raisers.  A corn maze adventure.   The Food and Wine Festival in Epcot with a couple of friends.  A baby shower.

Lots of fun stuff, but oy I'm already tired!  I just need everybody healthy..........

September was a month of finishes as well, and if you lasted this long, you get rewarded with pictures of finished projects.  I was on a kitty blanket roll (easy to do when the brain is dead) and finished 3 of them.

Kitty Blanket #1

100 stitches on size 10 needles.  Caron Simply Soft Black with various Sassy Stripes from the stash.  Measures 25" x 23.5"

Kitty Blanket #2

45 stitches on size 10 needles.  White acrylic with various other acrylics from the stash.  Measures 11.5" x 13"

Kitty Blanket #3

80 stitches on size 11 needles.  Various worsted weight acrylics doubled.  Measures 24.5" x 24.5".  I just finished weaving the ends in an hour ago.

That's three for the shelter and I may be able to get one more done before we go.  I'm waiting for cooler weather to drop them off, but with the forecast reading high 80s for the next two weeks, I have plenty of time......

To break up the kitty blankets and to avoid knitting anything for family or babies, I looked thru More Last Minute Knitted Gifts and decided to make a soft basket.

I used some cotton yarn from the stash and I think it came out really cute.   However I made the small one and it's SMALL!

See?

So there you have it.  The only thing on the needles is my ongoing afghan squares so I cast on for sock #2 for my nephew.  I'm abt an inch in.  My goal is to mail it out to him in the next couple of weeks.  I just checked his weather as well and the temps in NC are in the high 80s with a heat index of 90.

Apparently I have some time with the sock as well...........
