Moving Right Along

So far I've finished off the back of the sweater
baby sweaters look SO small!

and have started the left front.

Sock #1 is at the foot and I only have a couple more inches before the decrease.  I just cant make up my mind as to how many inches I want the sock to be so I have it on hold.

I was playing in my fabric this morning and I realized two things:   1) I may not have SABLE (stash beyond life expectancy), but I've got a LOT!     and  2)  there are still many more quilts I want to make.

I felt the same way when I went thru my yarn.  I'm afraid to go thru my cross stitch!  The last thing I need is another project in the works!!!

Most people stop crafting in the summer, but not me.  I rev up.  What about you?  Do you go on a crafting hiatus like the Fall Lineup or do you just switch over to the new Summer Shows on cable??

Feel free to talk abt either crafting or TV viewing.  I do both.

Fun with Fiber

The past few days I've been going thru the piles next to the bed.  Bags of yarn, bags of projects, piles of magazines, more bags of yarn that have accumulated over the past few months.  Yarn I forgot I bought when I was with Dee at Tuesday Morning.  Yarn I bought to fix an afghan for my sister.  The bag of ongoing squares  for my afghan (woohoo!!)

Meanwhile I am making some progress on Elliot's (the soon to be new nephew) projects.  I've got the cuff done on sock #1

and I should start the heel today.

I've also started the sweater.

The pattern is from a Debbie Bliss book of baby projects, a two toned v-neck sweater.  It's really very cute and very easy.  I have enough yarn to make a matching hat and socks.

Of course as I was playing in the stash, I came across a few skeins of yarn that I want for the next pair of socks.  Since I am the slowest knitter ever, I narrowed it down to this yarn
It's an orange-y/rust color that I've liked since I bought it.  I wound it into a ball last night while watching Kate and Leopold.  Love that movie!!!!

Hope everybody is having a nice long weekend.  What have you been doing?  Grilling?  Beaching?  Hitting some of the ceremonies around town?  Or just vegging inside to escape the storms??

Saturday Sky

Today is the first Saturday in 5 weeks that had nothing specific planned so I took the opportunity to keep it that way. I told the kids that there would be no friends over and no going over to friends. We all need the time to crash and recharge. I know they are tired when I get no arguments!

This morning was a little bit hazy and cloudy

which I figured was due to Beryl, but it's cleared up really well.

Other than the heat index hitting 100, it was a nice day!  Apparently Beryl will be making more of an appearance tomorrow.  I'm not complaining, we REALLY need the rain.

Since my socks are finished and I have a nephew arriving in a few short weeks, I decided it was time to find a few things to make for him.  After sorting thru the yarn and my books, I've started a pair of baby socks

using malabrigo yarn.  I figure it's the perfect baby sock yarn.  It's soft and I dont have to worry abt the kid wearing it thru.

I also pulled out some yarn for a baby sweater.

I'll be casting on for that tonight.

Since I'm starting two projects, I decided to clean up my night stand.  It's a HUGE dumping ground for papers, pens, cameras and all around general stuff.

I think it looks much better now.  It will never be cleared totally off, but if I can keep the stuff down to a dull roar, I'm good.  Now if I could only do the same thing for my dresser......

Last but not least, this past Thursday #1 Son had his band banquet where he cleaned up pretty well!

Intermediate Band plus Steel Drums have kept him busy this year, but he's enjoyed all of it.

Now there are only 8 days left of school. I've got stuff planned for the summer, including a road trip in July, but I'm looking forward to the slower pace.

Anybody got anything specific planned for this Memorial Day wknd??

Monday Morning Update

I finally have a finish to share!!!!  My  Baby Girl's socks are done!

I finished them off last night, and while they are a *little* snug, they fit pretty well.

Baby Girl saw them and wanted to know if she could try them on.

They fit her perfectly!!!  So it looks as if she has a pair of socks for next winter.  That is if her foot stops growing.  She's a ladies 7 right now and she's only 10.

I started sock #1 on 2/17 and finished weaving in all the ends on 5/20.  I am SUCH a slow knitter.  The yarn is Lornas Laces sport weight in Mt Creek #56 and the cuff/heel/toe purple is Silja #392 (it's a yarn I bought a LONG time ago from the LYS that has since changed owners and then closed down).  The Lorna's Laces is a really nice yarn, the Silja would not be bought again.  It's not a bad yarn, but it's a bit rough.  I may add it to another sport weight and make some bulky charity socks with the left overs.

Now that these socks are done, I really dont have alot going on.  I have my ongoing blanket squares (if I could find them) and I have the 2nd fingerless mitt to do (I'm suffering from SMS).  However I DO have some projects to start.  When I was asking one SIL when my other SIL was due, she told me and said, "Why, do you have to finish up some projects?"  Hmmmm, guess I should START some projects so I have something to finish up!!  We plan on going up the beginning of July so I have a little over a month to do something.  Glad babies are small!!!  I played in my yarn this AM and found some yarn to make some socks and some other yarn to make a sweater set.  Not sure if I'll use that yarn or not, I had another yarn in mind, but I cant find that one either.  It's probably in the basket of yarns that I haven't looked thru yet.  My sock yarn and charity yarn are in order but everything else is sort of a mess.

I'll keep you posted with the next set of projects coming up.

Saturday Survival

I did it!  I survived all the field trips of the 2011/2012 school year.  This time was a band trip where #1 Son was in a parade
and then got to play in Universal Studios.

Eight boys with three moms is MUCH easier than 15 boys with 3 moms like we had last week! However we did have bus issues again this trip.  Last week the bus driver took us to Sea World instead of Epcot so we were much later than planned.  Then we had to wait another half hour before we could leave because we were waiting on other ppl to come back to the buses.  THIS time we got to the right area,  but had bus trouble going home.  Instead of three buses, we had only one, parked in a different location and did NOT have all the instuments on it.  We got another bus to cram the rest of us in and sent the bus with all our stuff on it back to the school.  Thankfully we had all the buses back at the school by the time we arrived.

Most of the time I will bring my knitting on field trips, but I never get the chance to work on it.  I'm usually helping the teacher with paperwork or I'm with the other chaperones conspiring as to how we're going to handle the day.  Coming home I'm usually too hot and tired to knit.   So the knitting will eventually fall to the bottom of the backpack waiting for another day.
When packing for this Universal trip, I decided to leave my knitting at home.  We were leaving really early (had to be at the school by 6:15AM) and between the parade and the theme park I figured I'd never work on it.  Thankfully my tired brain grabbed it at the last second.  They put the chaperones on the bus 20 min before the kids, we were scattered thruout the bus so it was hard to talk, and with the early hour, we were just waiting for the caffeine to kick in.  So  I pulled out the sock.  I got to knit on it while waiting for the kids to board and then I got to knit some more on the drive there.  I NEVER get to do this!!  It was SO nice and I got a lot done.   So much so that I am at the toe decreases.
I am SO glad that I brought it at the last minute.  And yes that IS Lucy modeling the sock.  I'm hoping to finish it off tomorrow.  Today was spent recouperating.  I still have some things scheduled for the next couple of weeks, but nothing major.  AND there are only 12 school days left.  When did THAT happen?!?!!?

I contemplated that information while looking up.

Hope you had a beautiful Saturday!

Some Mish and a little bit of Mosh

Since my life has been a mish mosh of events lately, I've decided that this post will reflect that.

In the past month I have been to Magic Kingdom, Hollywood Studios,

Epcot

15 boys to 3 adults.

 and an overnight SeaWorld trip.

Why yes I AM petting a penguin!

Add a few school club parties, PTO meetings, Teacher Appreciation Week, FCAT, car wash fundraisers, advanced chorus concerts, Steel Drum Band concert at UCF (they came in at superior in their class!!!  WOOHOO!), regular band concerts, book fairs and science fairs.

We still have one more band concert tonight and another band trip to Universal Studios tomorrow (did I mention I sprained my toe and walk with a limp?!!?).  The Band Banquet is next week along with a talent show (thankfully it's just to watch and NOT participate in).  One more trip to Hollywood studios rounds out my month.

I was less busy when I worked in the Advertising Dept for a NY newspaper.  And the reason why I'm living on full octane coffee.

However every single one has been fun and I havn't regretted any of it.

Amazingly enough, throughout all of the above, I have yet to have one plant die on me!!!!  We dont have a working automated sprinkling system so I have been manually watering pretty much every day.  The plants that are making me the happiest??

The impatiens

and my tomatoes.

I am always amazed when I see actual food growing off a bush.

I also decided that it was time to pick up my sock again.

I just finished the gussett last night and am on the main part of the foot. I'm in the final stretch and hope for this sock to be done by the end of the month.

So there you have it.  My May in a nutshell.  Explains why alot of knitting isnt happening, THAT'S for sure!!!!

How is everybody's spring coming along??  Any spring cleaning??  Summer vacations being planned?

Simple Woman's Daybook for May 8, 2012

Outside my window...it was another warm one out there.  The heat index was in the 90s.  Thankfully we got some rain and it helped cool things off a bit.  Rain still helps.  In a couple of months the only thing rain will do is make the air thick and sticky.

I am thinking...
Abt the next couple of weeks.  It's that time of year where all the events seem to take place.  School is out the first week of June so we've got field trips and concerts and award ceremonies to attend.

I am thankful for...
the fact that I found my sock!!!!   I took it with me on the SeaWorld field trip hoping I could put in a couple of rows here and there but that just did NOT happen.  It seems that when I don't bring something to knit on, we've got lots of downtime.  When I do, I dont even take it out of the backpack.  I thought I switched the sock from my backpack to my suitcase, but when it was all unpacked and put away, I got scared that I lost it since it was not in either suitcase I brought.  Apparently I didnt take it out of my backpack and it settled all the way at the bottom.  I found it today and am THANKFUL for it.

From the kitchen...
Roasted chicken and potatoes for dinner.  I was planning peas or green beans with the meal but I was out of both.  We had corn instead.  Right now Baby Girl is making brownies for Teacher Appreciation Week.  I'm debating if I want to make a cake tonight or in the AM for the middle school.  Not sure which will win out.......

I am wearing...
My pjs.  I'm wiped out and it's only a little after 8pm.

I am creating...
Not a whole lot.  I cant find my knitted squares, I just found my sock and when I thought of starting a new project I just decided to play on the computer instead.

I am going.....
on another field trip on Friday.  This time to Epcot with #1 Son.

I am reading...
A lot of fan fiction.  Especially for the tv show Castle.  LOVE this show.

I am hoping...
For more afternoon showers.  It helps with the watering of the plants.

I am hearing...
I am hearing the hum of the a/c and Baby Girl sniffling.   It's rather quiet in the house.  I think we're all just done with the school year.

Around the house...
I've got plants blooming outside, but no weeds are pulled.  The IO mowed and cut back some of the hedges pretty far back but they really needed it and will bounce back soon.  Night blooming jasmine seems to be a plant we cant kill at Happy Acres.

One of my favorite things...
The smell of brownies in the oven, esp when I didnt' have to make them.

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Other than Epcot, not that much.  It's the following two weeks that will be really busy.  I'm pacing myself.

Here is picture thought I am sharing...
When I cleaned out my closet, I found a quilt that my mother in law gave me.  It was a quilt she had made for one of her many kids and she gave it to me when #1 Son was still a baby.  We were visiting
their house in NY and she gave it to me to put on the grass so I had a spot to put #1 Son.  She told me to keep it.

The quilt is made out of sheets and old poly blend shirts the kids outgrew.  I recognize the plaid fabric because the IO had a shirt just like that when I first met him (and it was the first thing I got rid of when we got married!)  When I came across it this time I decided to pull it out.  The kids like to pull out blankets when watching tv and this is perfect for that.  Since it's a poly blend this quilt can take a beating and get washed and dried w/o me having to worry abt it.

Thursday in the Garden

The good news????  Nothing's died yet.  Woohoo!!!

Actually things are moving along well.  My petunias are blooming in every container.

The geraniums are starting to bloom as well.

The vinca are doing well.  In fact I didnt notice at first but there are not only hot pink and white in this container, but light pink as well!!!

BONUS!

With all the watering going on, my azalea bush that I thought had seen better days is actually blooming!

It's still really scraggly but I've got flowers!

The impatiens only have one bloom

but there are SO many ready to pop, this container should be full of flowers by the wknd.

The biggest surprise?  My tomato plants.  I'm doing a before and after because it's amazing the difference.

TP#1  before

and after

TP#2 before

and after.

This has already reached the top of the cage!!!!  The blooms from last week fell off, really no surprise because they were there before I planted them, but I've got a couple of new ones already starting to come up.

The only problem with all the watering is that all the dormant weeds and stray runner blades of grass are starting to pop up.  Next week will be a week of clearing out the weeds and *maybe* putting down a layer of mulch, if for no other reason than to make it look nicer.

We did have a couple of scares, two of my mexican petunias looked like they were going to die, but after a couple of days of double watering, they seem to be doing much better.

Will my plants continue to progress?  Or will (insert animal here) decide to dig a couple of them up??  Stay tuned for the next episode of

*insert Don Pardo's voice here with dramatic music*

Thursday in the Garden.

Thanks for stopping by!

It's not a closet.......

....it's a clown car!!!!  The more I pull out, the more I find.

For those of you not on Facebook, I found a dead mouse in my closet.  Not because we have mice, but because I have a cat (Hemi, I'd put money yarn on it!) that likes the catch and release system, he catches outside and releases inside (sentiment from Janet and TOTALLY true!)  I find more lizards than I care to say.  He brings them in and plays with them.  They get away and hide.  Usually in my closet.  I dont mind lizards and try to catch them to put them back out.

This time was different.  Last week I kept smelling something that was off.  I thought it might be the septic tank and checked for signs of problems.  Nothing.  Took out the hamper thinking something was put in there that should have been washed immediately.  Nada.  Meanwhile this smell kept getting worse and worse.

We finally figured out the smell was coming from my closet.  Ugh.  Do you know how much stuff is IN my closet?!?  I was scared.  What WAS it???  What would I find???

It was a tiny little white mouse.  The kind you find in a pet shop for snakes.  Since we no longer have a snake population outside (Hemi would catch the baby racer snakes and BRING THEM IN!)(we finally had to close the cat door to keep the animals outside) he seems to have gone after the rodent population. While I'm happy he's a hunter, I do NOT want mice inside!

I had to find my big girl panties, put them on and get rid of this horrid smelling thing (how can something so small smell SO bad?!?)  After spraying it with Lysol a couple of times, I was able to get a gardening shovel and get rid of it.  That was one of the hardest things I've EVER done!

Since I had removed what seemed like half the closet floor, I figured I'd keep going.  I got rid of all the clothes that are too small on me (and have been for a couple of years); packed all the winter stuff away; pulled out all the tote bags (how many do I own??); removed the bags of scrapbook papers, albums, saved items from the kids, etc.; pulled out bags of yarn stored in there for either future unknown projects or left over from previous projects.

My room looks like a bomb went off in it and yet my closet still seems only half way done.  How is this possible??  Part of me wants to shove it all back in and deal with it later, but I don't know when later will be so I will continue on.  Hopefully I will be done tonight......

At least the smell is gone so I know I wont find anymore snake food......

That can't be right........

I had to flip the calendar today to May.

MAY!

It may be May on the calendar, but it feels more like April 10th.  How can I be mentally almost a month behind?!?!?

As if Facebook, Blogger, Club Pogo and Ravelry weren't enough to suck up any downtime I have, I finally got signed into Pinterest.  I've been trying to get an invite emailed out to me but it just never seemed to work.  Then I asked Dee for an invite and within 5 min I was on.  Hmmmmmm, I find it a bit overwhelming, but I'm sure with some quality time spent going thru it all, I'll figure it out.

Since I still dont have a complete computer I thought I would play  On This Day in History.  I went to 2009 because Baby Girl will be going to her first overnight field trip to SeaWorld, the same one #1 Son went on 3 years ago.  However I cant find any pics of the trip.  None on the blog anyway.

So instead I'll post a sweater that was made at that time but is now way too small.

A sweater for Baby Girl.........

from this post.  That sweater is big and loose on her there.  Not so much anymore.  I can't keep up with how fast both kids are growing.  #1 Son's foot is almost a 10 mens and Baby Girl now wears a 7 womens.  She is getting close to my size!!!  A 9!!!   However I see this as a win/win.  She can borrow mine if I can borrow hers!
