The Last of the Quiet

It is the last day of spring break.  Starting tomorrow there are only 9 weeks left of school.  In that short amount of time I will have field trips and concerts and school events and parties.  At the end of those 9 weeks I will no longer have an elementary school child.  But I *will* have a high schooler.  How did THAT happen?!?!?

I'm sitting here thinking this is the calm before the storm...........
(on so many different levels)

Since it was spring break and I share my computer with the locals,  I never got a chance to post my Feline Fridays or my Saturday Sky.
Hemi napping on me under my computer table

Gorgeous sky on Saturday!

I now consider myself caught up.

Meanwhile I had something happen this wknd that was odd.....I had nothing on the needles!  I finished up  two different projects.  First one was a kitty snuggle bed (you can find the link here)

I like the way it came out,  but Lucy found it a little small.

Princess would rather fall off a dresser than sit in it.

And Hemi was too busy playing to be bothered with it.

I've left it on the couch but nobody's really that enthralled by it so it will go into the pile for the kitty shelter.  I think it would be perfect for the kittens.

The second project finished would be these.

The squares for my afghan are finished and all I need to do now is attach them.  All 63 of them.......  Did I mention that next week our high will be in the 80s???

Socks are on the needles now, some grey sportweight for a local charity.  I'm adding contrasting heels and toes but that is proving to be more difficult than it should.  Part of me wants to just get more yarn (a sacrifice I'm willing to make) but I really want to use up the odds and ends of what I already have which is where I'm leaning.  I'm abt 2" into the cuff so I have a little bit of time to decide.

Hope everybody had a safe weekend!

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...
it is gorgeous and a bit cold.   It's only 5pm and it's already 59 degrees outside.  It's gonna be another chilly night.  No complaints here.

I am thinking...that I really need to get out and enjoy the weather while it's nice.  May need to hit up the clearance section of Lowe's.

I am thankful...for medicinal steroids.  We had to make an ER run last night because Baby Girl's asthma got really bad.  None of the meds I had at home were touching it so I knew it was time for the next step up.  The staff in the front really needed to work on their bedside manner (asking me if my daughter has a history of asthma does not mean she has been to this hospital before.  Assuming the wrong answers will only piss us both off.)  That being said, the staff in the back were fantastic!!  The nurses were kind and the dr was amazing.  I love medical staff that asks questions and takes what the mom says into account.  You have seen my child for 5 min.  I have seen her for many years.  I have a little idea of what's going on.

In the kitchen...today is leftovers but yesterday I made a ham, some scalloped potatoes, green bean casserole and corn bread.  We were all home, it was cold, it was GOOD!

I am wearing...pj bottoms and a red San Diego t-shirt.  I had on some knit socks but I just polished my toes and I'm letting them dry.

I am creating...I brought my  afghan squares with me to the hospital.  I got 1/2 of one done.

I am going...to a religious memorial  tonight.  It's the observance of Jesus' death when he had his last passover with his apostles.  After Judas left he instituted the Lord's Evening Meal and explained symbolism of the unleavened bread and wine.  He also said to keep doing this is rememberance of him.  I will be doing that tonight.

I am wondering...if I have enough leftovers for dinner.

I am reading...Fanfiction

I am hoping...that the meds I have for Baby Girl will make her feel better before Spring Break is over.

I am looking forward to...Friday.  If the weather is nice, we're heading to the beach.  Remember I live in Florida and while today may be great beach weather for you northerners, it's too cold for us here.

I am hearing..... last night's episode of Castle.  Baby Girl is watching it on our DVR.

I am pondering...too tired to ponder today.  Ask me tomorrow.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things...caring medical ppl.  Most are.  Others should seek other employment.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Hopefully a beach day on Friday.  If not then bowling.  Something fun with the kids.

A peek into my day...
We didnt get enough of Hemi in my last post so here you go Linda!

If you want to play, go here.

Saturday Sky

Well while some of you are buried in snow, we hit a high of 85 under a cloudy sky.

Too warm for my liking but thankfully we will be cooling down as the week goes on.

Cilantro and basil are still coming along

and the wildflowers and sunflowers are sprouting.

So far so good.

It's been a busy morning,  I was out and about by 9:30am and didnt sit down until 4pm.  I went grocery shopping, cleaned my fridge before I loaded it back up

and then made some chicken noodle soup.

Baby Girl has been fighting something the past couple of days and today it's winning.  She sounded like a frog earlier today and it made me want to make some soup.  It's my grandmother's recipe, and it took me a few tries to get it right, but tonight's soup was like she made it.

Grandma's Chicken Soup

1 pound carrots
1 package celery
1 large onion
1 bullion cube
minced garlic
chicken

Rough cut carrots, celery, onion and brown them up in some butter in large stock pot.  Add garlic (I just took a scoop and tossed it in).  Cook a couple min more.  Meanwhile melt bullion cube in two cups water (I nuked the water for 2 min and mushed the cube in it).  Add chicken, water with bullion cube and more water to cover chicken by a couple of inches into the pot.  Cover and boil for 1.5 hours.

I added some egg noodles and it is YUMMY!!!!   It's VERY basic, but that's what I like abt it.  Perfect when you are sick.

And since I missed Feline Friday, here's a little Hemi to get you thru the rest of your weekend.

are the scary ppl gone yet??

The Simple Woman's Daybook

FOR TODAY

Outside my window...
another gorgeous day here in Central Florida.  It got a bit warm by the afternoon (we hit 80) but I can live with it!!  Wish we had more days like today.

I am thinking...how we are entering into the last 9 weeks of school.  This means the final stretch of middle school for #1 Son and the final stretch of elementary school for Baby Girl.  I'm trying NOT to think abt it, but it's hard to do when I look at my calendar and see it fill up with all the end of year activities.

I am thankful...that my kids do well in school.

In the kitchen...no new recipes.  I've had no time.  It was a busy wknd filled with company, errands and a funeral.   Instead I made the pork chop recipe again (dump apple pie filling, chops and then cover with stuffing) this time following the recipe exactly.  Not as good as the first time because I didnt cook it as long.  Next time will keep it covered and add 5 min to the cooking.  Tonight's dinner was a roasted chicken, roasted potatoes (in the same pot), green beans and corn.  Its my favorite meal and Oh. So. Yummy!

I am wearing...and old t-shirt and blue shorts

I am creating...I made another camera case.
true color

in action!

It started out as a sunglass holder but the earpiece of my sunglasses kept getting caught so I ripped it out.  This project got ripped out a couple of times before I was happy with it.  I still wasnt thrilled with it, but it does the job.  And when Baby Girl saw it, she thought it was so cute!  Kid approved, cant go wrong there.

This leaves me with only the squares for my afghan to work on.  I'm still in the process of making the white squares.  I'm not loving the white color (too blah) which has slowed me down IMMENSELY!!!!!  And I really need to start a pair of socks.....

I am going...to be volunteering at the school the next couple of days.  It's the last Field Day for both me and Baby Girl.

I am wondering... how long it will take me to start blubbering like a baby because I'm leaving this school.

I am reading... sigh.....not much.  Some articles in the newspaper.  Recipes in magazines.  Spring break is coming up soon and it would be nice to be able to spend one of those days reading.

I am hoping...for nice weather the next couple of days.

I am looking forward to... spring break.  We all need this time off and some of us moms are trying to plan a beach day.

I am hearing..... the tv from the living room.  Something from the food channel

Around the house...since we had my inlaws visiting on Saturday, we cleaned the house.  It seems the only time I can get a clean house is when I have company!  What made this time different is I FINALLY got rid of the white craft table from the living room!!!  This is amazing since it has lived in my living room for approx 4 YEARS!   It has moved around the living room (and it's not a big room!) and has had various items/projects on top of it, but I finally moved it out on Saturday.  We got a glider and ottoman from Freecycle and I needed the space to move the chair from the middle of the room.

I am pondering...how long it will take me to move this same table out of my bedroom.....

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things...

Lucy legs!!!

A few plans for the rest of the week:
Volunteering.

A peek into my day...
Coriander and basil doing well.  Started sunflowers and wildflowers.

So there you have it.  Another daybook entry.  They seem to be my staple on a Tues.  If you want to play, go here.  And I just wanted to add I want to thank everybody who reads and comments to this blog.  I try to answer everybody that I can (even though some I dont have emails to respond to).  However this month has been crazy and I havent responded as much as I'd like.  Be forewarned.  You may get a response to a March comment in June!!

Nuff said.  Have a pleasant evening!

More Experimenting

There have been a few websites that I've gone to that have shown how to hard boil eggs in the oven.  I know, weird, right??  But after seeing it a few times I just had to try it.  So I pulled out my muffin pan and six eggs to try it out.
ignore the old, stained pan

The recipe says to bake in the oven for 25-30 min at 325 degrees.   Guess what?  It worked!

They look a bit weird and I probably could have pulled them out at 27 min instead of 30 because my eggs just started getting that green outer yellow part, but they look good and tasted fine!!!   The IO thought it was interesting but couldnt figure out why you would make eggs this way instead of boiling them on the stove.  The perks are supposed to be no worries of splashing boiling water everywhere ("but you're still using a hot oven") and having no eggs crack in the pot ("but doesnt it cost more to heat the oven?").  The shells were easy to get off and they were tasty so I would probably make them this way again, at least one more time since Baby Girl wasnt here to see it in action!

The second recipe to try was a Chicken Apple Salad Wrap.  I didnt have any wraps so I just scooped the chicken salad onto a bowl of baby greens (a chicken apple salad salad!)

This was yummy!!!!  I got it from  the Publix FamilyStyle magazine but it must be from an old magazine because there is no link for it on their website so I'll post the recipe instead.

Chicken Apple Salad Wrap

1.5 cups shredded rotisserie chicken (I used two 10 oz cans of chicken)
1 large Granny Smith apple (I used a Gala since that's what I had) chopped (I peeled mine before I chopped it up) (abt 1.5 cups)
1/3 cup dried cranberries (I used a little less than a 1/4 cup)
1 stalk celery (I substituted a 1/4 english cucumber), chopped
1 green onion, sliced
1/3 cup mayo
1/3 cup sour ceram
1 TBS lemon juice (I used 1/2 lemon)
1/8 tsp EACH  salt, pepper and cinnamon

1.  Place chicken in a large bowl.  Add the apple, cranberries, celery and green onion.  Set aside

2.  In a small bowl stir together the mayo, sour cream, lemon juice, salt, cinnamon and pepper.  Add to chicken mixture.  Stir to coat.

3.  Spoon chicken mixture onto tortillas or pita bread and roll or fold up.

Makes 4 servings.

Baby Girl thought it was a bit sweet (probably because of the fruit), but I really liked it.  You could add pineapple instead of the other fruit as well.  So many variations with this.  Definitely a keeper!

I'm on a roll with new recipes, dinner will be pork chops with apples and stuffing.  It looks good, lets hope it tastes good as well!

FOR TODAY

Outside my window... it was rainy from the time I woke up to abt 2pm.  Now it's sunny-ish (sun is setting so not as bright as before) and cooler.  We're at 66 right now.
**I started this at 7is.  It is now 9pm.  It has taken me 2 hours to finish this post.

I am thinking...that Baby Girl should have cut up her strawberries before she dipped them in chocolate.  She is a mess!

I am thankful... for chocolate covered strawberries!!  They are in season and cheap so we've been buying a lot lately.  Melt some semi-sweet chocolate chips and you've got a YUMMY dessert!

In the kitchen... I am going thru some cooking magazines to 1)try something new   and 2)try to weed thru some of the stacks of magazines I've got!  Tried a Taco Bake tonight for dinner.  Consensus?  The IO said it wasnt horrible, #1 Son said it's not his favorite but he'll finish it, Baby Girl said it was better as a dip than dinner.  I liked it at first but as I got close to the end it wasnt that great.  One recipe down,  four to go.  I figure we'll either find a new favorite recipe or the old favorites will be a welcome change!!!  Tomorrow is another beefy casserole dish with cream of mushroom soup mixed in and topped with tater tots.
**The IO has changed his mind to this meal being one of the top three of disgusting things he's ever eaten.  "Sorry."  No problem.  I didnt like it either.  However I apparently didnt feel as strongly as he did.  And #1 Son has informed me that he does not like layered food.  Other than lasagna.  I think I'll be making the pork chops tomorrow before I do another "layered food" dinner.  Or I'll just order take out and be done with it all!!!  LOL

I am wearing...blue t-shirt and tan shorts.

I am creating...not much.  I did make a little stretchy cover for my camera

but I'm not a big fan of it.  It's too big.  The more I knit with the kitchen cotton, the more I'm realizing it's best for the kitchen.  My favorite camera cover was made with (Dee dont look!) Cascade Fixation.  *SOME* dont care for this yarn (yes I'm looking at you Dee!), and while knitting with this yarn takes some getting used to (it's got elastic and you have to be careful not too pull too tight), it makes great cup holders and head bands.  It does NOT make good socks.  I've made two or three pairs with this yarn and it strinks terribly over time.  I still have a couple of balls of Fixation and I may have to make another camera cover.  If it goes well a sunglass case will follow.  And then another headband.  Baby Girl LOVES the deep purple one.

I am going... thru some piles of stuff in my bedroom and it's amazing how much stuff there is!!!  It seems the more I keep digging, the more stuff I keep finding!  I'm moving some things back into my craft room, and others will stay in here.  My knitting is in a time out since I seem to be ripping back more than I'm knitting.  The camera cover was ripped and reknit twice, and I'm still not happy with it.  The slipper socks have been started and ripped out twice.  It's back in the bag to think abt what it's done.  Instead I decided to pull out my stitching and put in a couple of strands of white in my sheep.  I may put in another strand later tonight.

I am wondering... how long the IO will tolerate the casseroles for dinner.  He's never been a big fan and two in a row may be too much for him to handle.
**After tonight's meal, not sure what he'll think of the other one.  Oh well, it wont stop me from experimenting!!  (insert maniacal laugh here)

I am reading...I'm back to fan fiction.  Short stories under 3000 words seem to be the best fit for me right now.

I am hearing...the tv show Switched At Birth.  Actually I'm watching it.  It's a show you need to watch.  They have a lot of subtitles due to the sign language they have in the show.

I am looking forward to...getting thru the piles in my bedroom.  They've been sitting too long.

I am hoping......to keep up the momentum of getting  rid of the piles.  I just need to be strong enough to get rid of the stuff I dont use.  THIS is the hardest part.  I did get rid of a garbage bag full of junk so that's a start.

Around the house...still havent planted anything.

I am pondering...the chances of getting my goals done that I have set for myself this month.

A favorite quote for today...
kind of funny to post this quote after questioning the ability to meet my goals!

One of my favorite things...my cell phone.  I dont know how I did it before I had one.

A few plans for the rest of the week:  some volunteer work and getting the house ready for my in laws.  I'm VERY happy they are laid back.  If they were the white glove kind, we would NOT get along......

A peek into my day...
When I went to JoAnn's with Baby Girl for her tiara, I had to walk thru the yarn section.  I ALWAYS walk thru the yarn section when I'm at JoAnn's.  This time I found something new.  Lionbrand Bonbons.

There were three different kinds hanging up but this set just kept calling my name.  Since I had a coupon just itching to be used, it was a win/win!  It's kind of hard to tell the cuteness of this package by this picture.  Let me give you a reference for scale.

They are itty bitty and Oh So CUTE!!!!  I have NO idea what I'm going to do with them, but for now I just pull them out of the basket and look at them.  The colors soothe me.  I will have to find something equally as cute to make.

If you want to play go here and leave a comment so I can check yours out.

Saturday Sky

The windows are open and the breeze is airing out the house.  It's also airing in lots of pollen!  This is why they make Zyrtec.

Looking up, this is what I see.

The sky does definitely change throughout the day, this AM it was a deep blue and no clouds at all.  Wonder what it will look like around 7pm?

I did mention that I would post the Best in Show from the quilt show yesterday, but there were a couple more that I wanted to share as well.  If you are familiar with quilting, then you've heard of paper piecing.  It's where you sew fabric to paper following a pattern.  It allows you to get a little more detailed while keeping sharp corners and points.  There were two that stood out to me.  This one is of flower baskets.

LOVING the fabric choices!

The other is of forest animals.

she did a FANTASTIC job!!!!

LOVE the detailed work on all the animals but the raccoon really stood out!

Ok so the winning quilt.  It's definitely not a quilt that you would curl up with on the couch with the cat or dog.  It's a quilt that you hang up occasionally to keep it from getting dirty.

She did an incredible job!  The details were amazing and the different creams really gave it life.   It was gorgeous!

That being said, I still prefer the old flannel quilt that's been used and abused.  Those are always the ones that bring comfort and warmth.

Hope you've enjoyed the virtual quilt show as much as I did.  Tomorrow I hope to post some knitting progress (sort of, lately there's been more ripping than knitting) and some new yarn stash.

If you have gorgeous weather, get out in it!  If not, curl up with a good book, a good cup of tea or a fun project.  If you've got books on tape you can do all three!!!!

Feline & Fiber Arts Friday

In the past two days I've battled a migraine, a sick child (allergies have been BAD this year), a drs visit, threatening motivating said sick child to do make up work, missing prescriptions from pharmacy, missing ATM cards AND a broken coffee pot!!!

It's been a rough couple of days.  Which is why I'm happy that my inlaws are coming NEXT week instead of this wknd.  AND because of the insanity that is going on right now at Happy Acres, I've had to rearrange my schedule which alleviated some free time to attend the annual local quilt show!!!  I really thought I was going to miss it because there was no way I originally could go today.  So instead of focusing on all the crap going on, I choose to focus on the pretty blankets.

Well some of them were pretty.  Every year there are a few that make your eyes hurt.

I like the individual fabrics in this quilt, but it's really busy to me when they are put all together.

this one reminds me of sheets from the late seventies and then sort of slapped together.

cool concept but it makes my eyes hurt

I can't decide on this one.  I really like parts of it, but it is VERY bright and it probably glows under black light

You had your falling safety pin quilt.

a staple pattern for the past few years

Embellished quilts were popular.  A woman used up all her old doilies and hankies and added them to the blocks in her quilt.
I LOVE how she cut out the design from the doily!

There was a new to me technique.  These remind me of the watercolor quilts popular a few years back.  However they are put together a lot easier.  You make 9 patch squares and put those together to make the color gradations.

can you see the 9 patch blocks??

There were alot of animal themed quilts

The crows were adorable!!  One vendor sold the kit if you wanted to make your own.

This one had a lot of cool animal fabric in it

This was quite simple but the embroidered kitties were adorable!

I'm not a big Baltimore Album quilt fan, but these two were cool.

I LOVED the fabric in this one!  The top one shows the entire quilt but this small portion shows off teh fabric colors better.

The size of the individual blocks were HUGE!!  I figured abt 2 FEET each!

Another quilt with great fabric was this house quilt.

I loved the fabric in this one as well

Come back tomorrow to see what was Best of Show.

And if you've made it this far looking for the feline portion of this post, I didnt forget.
I prefer my fuzzy wuzzy bear to those quilts.
