Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...
I'm sure a lot of you heard abt the explosion in Central Florida from the Blue Rhino Propane plant.  I am far enough away to be safe but close enough to have heard the explosions!  At first I thought it was thunder and then it sounded more like fireworks going off.  Who knew a propane plant was blowing up???   This morning was hazy from all the left over smoke but by the afternoon it was your typical Florida sunny day.  At least for me.  I doubt it felt *typical* for those affected by the blasts.

I am thinking...that I have a LOT to do in a limited amt of time.  There will be some big changes coming down the pike and I'm having a hard time focusing on all that has to be done.

I am thankful...I am not sick.  I had mentioned that #1 Son was sick last week.  Well he's better but Baby Girl got something similar over the wknd.  She never got as bad as him but she's definitely not well.  Today is the first day she's wanted food.  Three bites of cereal this morning and some soup this afternoon.  I think she's done eating for the day.  AND the IO threw up this morning!  He's been in bed all day.  Thankfully he never got as bad as #1 Son, but it wears a person out!  I'm bathing in Purel and misting Lysol all around the house!

In the kitchen...I tried out a new recipe by The Pioneer Woman called Chicken Spaghetti.  It turned out really well. It tasted like a mac and cheese with chicken in it.  I modified it a bit, used corkscrew noodles instead of spaghetti, cream of chicken instead of cream of mushroom soup, and I did not include the peppers.  BUT I did add green pepper sauce so we still had the spices but no chunks.  It wasn't a favorite, but it was one they all said would eat again.  It will be added to the rotation when I need to do something different.

I am wearing... pajamas.  I did change into regular clothes when I ran out, but when I got back, I popped right back into the jammies.

I am creating...I did put in three more strands into Too Pooped.  I'm trying to keep at it because I can see the end of this project.  A couple of strands every day (or two) will keep it moving along.

I'm also working on a sock.  Here is the sock I *was* working on.
As you can see I went from a random pattern to a zigzag pattern.  I really didn't like it so I did something I NEVER do.
I ripped it out.  You know it's a bad sign when you already feel that second sock syndrome kicking in when you're not even half way thru with the first sock.

I restarted with another yarn.
Loving it!  Well, almost.  I love the striping colors, but it is a bit thinner than the beige cuff and it seemed a bit thin on the bottom of the heel.  Plus I'm realizing that I may not have enough to finish the foot.  So I did something that I apparently am starting to do.
I ripped it out again.

I'm nothing if not stubborn so I pulled out yet another complimentary color and did the heel in a soft pink before I add that same yarn in.  I just started the gusset.

I just have one question for myself, with all the full amts of sock yarn I have, why do I insist on knitting in patchwork??

I am going...to put together a schedule that is doable and then just take one day at a time.

I am wondering...if I will follow the rest of the family by getting sick.  Aint nobody got time for that!

I am reading.. Facebook, news sites and a couple of blogs.  The latest movie is Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day.  I love this movie!  I've watched it twice in the past three days.

I am hoping...for a more focused mind.

I am looking forward to...this wknd!  I'm going to be seeing some old friends and their new grandbaby.  It's a bit weird to meet this new grandson since she is my first peer to have a grandbaby.  My kids are  just entering the teen years and she's playing with her daughter's son!!  He's adorable and cant wait to hold him.  Apparently there is a waiting list to do so too!

I am hearing...  the hum of the a/c and Chopped.  Right now they are trying to make grape jelly beans into something gourmet.  I think it's hysterical how some of these chefs just turn up their nose at such yummy goodness!!!

Around the house...some of the plans we had for the house have been halted.  I still need to thin out the junk and clutter and will be focusing on that.

I am pondering... the scope of my craft room.  I think I need to pick a craft (quilting, cross stitching, knitting, paints, etc) and just start sorting.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things... my knitting.  'nuf said

A few plans for the rest of the week: school doesn't start for another 2 weeks but apparently high school band does!  We've got hair cuts scheduled, band meetings to attend, band camp starts.  This will all include shelling out money.  It's one thing to spend money on school events DURING school, now I'm doing it ahead of time!   The wknd includes a convention and seeing old friends.

A peek into my day...no where near as productive as I wanted and needed to be, so instead I'm focusing on what I DID do.  I fed the kids.  I fed the cats.  I ran the dishwasher.  I made hair appts for myself and #1 Son.  I posted in my blog.  I got a high score on a Facebook game.  Some days this is all I can ask for.
If you want to play along, go here.

Now if you'll excuse me I'm going to try and get past the gusset on this sock!!

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...Rain, rain and more rain!  It started early today, around 10:30am, stopped, then started again.  It's 6:30 and I finally see the sun.  While I normally like rainy days, it's taking twice as long to run my errands.

I am thinking.. that I really am NOT mechanically inclined.  Number One Son was sick yesterday.  REALLY sick.  He sleeps in a loft bed and couldn't get down in time.  Needless to say his floor was a mess (not to mention the wall, but that might be too graphic to mention).  Since it was five in the morning and I had just gone to bed three hours before, I decided to douse the floor with Lysol, cover it with a towel and clean it up later on.  Later on turned into 24 hours later.  I cleaned up the clothes and the electronic cords and the other odds and ends on the floor before I lifted the towel.  Hey it dried up!!!!  Ok so I'll vacuum it up and just clean the bin.

It wasn't dry.

The wheels and belts are disgusting.  The hose is gross.  The tank has barely anything in it.

I am thankful...for a mechanically inclined husband who will enjoy the project.  Did I mention that I also burned out the electric pencil sharpener???  Personally the sharpener can be salvaged.  Not so much the vacuum cleaner.....

In the kitchen...Today is the first day he can keep anything down so I made some rice and roasted chicken.  Plain and simple.  He's STARVING, but once he starts to eat, he doesn't want it.  Poor kid.  He just had a growth spurt which made him lose weight, now this.

I am wearing...blue cotton pants, blue shirt.

I am creating...honestly, not a whole lot.  I haven't picked up a needle of any kind since my last post.  My quiet time has been spent on Facebook games.  It's the only thing my mind can handle.

I am going...to try and relax while driving our new (to us) van.  We bought a 2011 Odyssey over the wknd and it's the first time we've had a car payment in a LONG time.  Makes me nervous.  Plus it's a bit bigger than my old van AND things are located in different places (my old van is a 2002 Odyssey that the IO is driving) It's taking some getting used to.

I am wondering...what I was thinking when I went to vacuum his floor.  While I could clean out the bin, I didn't think abt the hose.

I am reading...blog posts.  However I'm still on the movie train.  Watched a marathon of Anne of Green Gables over the wknd.  I'd forgotten how much I love those movies!!  They cut out a lot of the scenery for time purposes (which I did notice and miss) but I still enjoyed what they left in.

I am hoping...to finish cleaning Number One Son's room later tonight.  I may need to make a trip to Wal-Mart to rent a rug cleaner...

I am looking forward to...planning a fun bowling day with the kids and their friends before school starts.

I am hearing.....the broken fan in the bathroom, the hum of my a/c, somebody in the shower, somebody else watching TV.

Around the house...do I really need to continue.  Do you really WANT me to continue???

I am pondering...the ethical reasonings of sneaking anti depressants in somebody's food.  Just kidding.  Sort of....

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things...
He hasn't made an appearance in awhile so here he is.

He's been a pain in the early hours of the day wanting tons of love (which I'm not too fond of when I've only had a few hours sleep) but he's a keeper!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  dr's appt tomorrow and seeing an old friend on Friday.

A peek into my day...picking up medical records for my dr's appt tomorrow.  Grocery shopping at Publix.  Paying water and electric.  All in the rain.  While my new car makes me nervous, I am VERY happy to be mobile again!

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...
sunny and hot! I checked the local weather station (abt a mile away) and it said it was 86.  Not horrible.  More info revealed the heat index was 96.  Ugh.  I'll be staying in my cave of a bedroom.  Baby Girl is with me, #1 Son is still in his room.

I am thinking...we have become slugs.  Or sloths.  Between the heat and the lack of transportation there isn't a desire to do much.

I am thankful...for this daybook.  It forces me to find something to be thankful for.  Too many first world problems can cloud what's really important.

In the kitchen...Grandma's Chicken was yesterday, today I have no idea.  I do have some ripe bananas that could be put into some banana muffins.  The downside to that is using the oven.  Maybe I'll slink out, make the muffins and slink back into the cold tomb my bedroom has become.

I am wearing...pajamas.  Wow, the more I'm reading this the more I'm realizing how lazy I'm becoming!

I am creating...the last post showed my progress on Too Pooped.  I've put in 2 more strands of floss since then, not enough to show a pic.  I also pulled out my ugly scarf and put in 8 more rows in that.  Again, not enough progress to warrant a picture.  Hopefully as the week progresses I'll get more done to post abt it.

I am going...nowhere.  I really don't know how families with just the one vehicle do it.  Not being able to run to the store is maddening!  I'm hoping to go car shopping this wknd.  The trick is to get the IO to find a middle ground somewhere between brand new with all the bells and whistles vehicle and one that I consider disposable (lasting for abt a year).  The word balance is NOT in his vocabulary!

I am wondering...when the world will stop being such an angry place.  I've had to stop watching the news again.  Too much hatred.

I am reading...blogs for the most part but I did download a book from Amazon called California Schemin'.  I'm only on chapter 2 but so far so good.  It's a nice easy read.

I am hoping...to finish the laundry.  I figure if I focus on one thing, I'll get something accomplished today.

I am looking forward to...car shopping this wknd.  I almost said school, but the more I thought abt it, the more I realized I'm not quite there yet.  I miss the schedule that school brings, but I'm not looking forward to the hectic schedule yet.  I blame the heat for my lack of good judgement.
I am hearing......the hum of the a/c.  I had to mute Ina Garten because I couldn't listen to her make chicken while I was trying to post this.  It's very quiet.  It may be early afternoon, but we are all still trying to ease into the day.  It's loud at midnight so I'm enjoying the peace while I can.

Around the house...ugh. Moving on.......

I am pondering...the benefits of a schedule.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things...my new hair clip.

I bought it this past wknd and I love it!  I used to have a similar one a long time ago but it broke.  I've used cheaper ones since or my reliable black scrunchies.  I love the scroll-y look to it and finally decided to treat myself and drop the $5 to get it.

I just have one question......why is it that I hem and haw abt spending $4.99 on a hair clip that I really like when I don't have a second thought when dropping $20 for sock yarn???  Hmmm, maybe THIS belongs in the pondering section of this post....

A few plans for the rest of the week......... until I get that second vehicle, not much!   I've got one friend who is cleaning her house for company that's coming in THREE weeks so she's not available for play dates and the other two local moms I do things with are both on vacation this week.  More first world problems.....

A peek into my day...thankfully the coffee is kicking in which means I need to use the energy to accomplish something today!  Laundry and maybe unloading the dishwasher......I'm such a dynamo!

Go here to play!

Switching Things Up

I had another finish this week, a kitty blanket for the shelter.

I LOVE the way the bulky yarns feel so squishy when knit up.  I cast on 54 sts on size 13 needles for this guy, used up 2.5 skeins of super bulky which resulted in a finished size of 23 x 18.

Once I finished this off, none of my other knitted projects were calling my name.  I needed to switch it up.  So I pulled out some cross stitch.  First was the sheep I've been working on, but that one has too much white.  I then pulled out Too Pooped, but that one has a LOT of brown in it.  I started to look for Kitty Cat Row, but decided that Too Pooped needed a few stitches in it.  I've been obsessed with it ever since!!!

Here is my before picture

I actually had a little bit more brown done before I started, but not much.  Here is where I am now.

And I still want to work on it!!!!  There is a LOT of brown left to do, but I'm still motivated and I'm moving along quickly so I hope to get more done before it goes back into hibernation for another year of two........

Contest Winnings!

Kathy from Kathy b's Yarn Garden had a contest a couple weeks back and I won!!!  I was expecting some REALLY nice Malabrigo, but she threw in some extra goodies for the fun of it.  This is what I got in the mail last week.

Isn't that a great package??  I got the yarn and some Godiva chocolate (that didn't melt in its journey!!  WOOHOO!) and these really cool coasters.

Here's a closer look at that lovely yarn.....
Thanks so much for having a fun contest, Kathy!!!

Another contest win from a long time ago was finally used, the Keychain Sock Blocker Sock.

Why is it that things are SO much cuter in miniature?!?  I pulled out some Cherry Tree Hill left over from another sock and made this tiny guy.  I will be making more, but I'll probably go up to a size 1 needle.  The zeros were a bit hard on my hands.  The only thing difficult abt this sock was using LONG needles for such LITTLE amounts of stitches.  I tend to drop stitches when I use the short needles, but I bet those 4 or 5" needles out there would be perfect for this project.

To keep the sock theme going I worked a bit on my shorty cuffs after my dilemma with the charity sock.

They are a good mindless sock to work on, no thought required! Both the cream and print yarns are by Kroy.

What did you work on this wknd??

Poor Planning = A Dilemma

I was on Ravelry the other day reading thru my forum groups when I came across a pattern that was for a charity sock drive.  Since I'm all abt the socks I figured I'd try it out.  I pulled out some brown wool that I bought at a GOOB sale plus some Regia bamboo yarn for the sock yarn held thru.  This is what I ended up with.

It's HUGE!!  I made the biggest size because those are always the ones that get ignored.  Since this looks like something you'd hang by the chimney with care, I had #1 Son try it on.  He wears a size 10.5 men's shoe so I figure it would give me some idea what I was dealing with.  The sock may *look* big, but its really thick and bulky too, which adds to the appearance.  The sock was less than an inch too big for him.  Ok that's a good thing.

I'm not thrilled with the bulkiness of the sock or the fact that it was a bit of a job getting it over #1 Son's wide foot, but one is made so I go to get more yarn to start the second one.

This is what I have left of the brown yarn.

I knew I had more yarn but I thought it was more than a walnut sized ball.  So this is my dilemma;  do I look for another brown yarn to try and get a close match to the brown I've already used?  (the brown I used is long discontinued by a company no longer around AND there is no matching yarn on Ravelry)   Do I use another color while keeping the same sock yarn and heel color and have fraternal socks?  (I don't have enough of the blue to make that the main color with brown as the heel)   Ripping it out is NOT an option.  I've ripped out a project with two strands held together and I'll never do that again!  Or do I just keep the sock and hang it in my craft room as decoration??

On top of it all, I made the sock for a large man's foot.  The bamboo sock yarn adds a bit of sparkle that I'm not sure will be a big hit.  Yes warmth is more important than style, but I want whoever that gets them to enjoy looking at them as well.

Feel free to weigh in.  I'm finding out that when I do socks for charity I'm better off doing a full ribbing all the way down the cuff and thru the top of the foot.  Seems more accommodating to various feet that way.

Slowly working my way down the foot of the other sock I'm working on.  Will post that one when I finish the foot.

Does anybody else think Lucy looks like Jabba the Hutt???

Bring me that camera or you will suffer from this outrage!

Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...
it's 87 degrees outside but it feels like 101.  And the IO wonders why I have no desire to go to Disney.

I am thinking... of another place to vacation.  Now that the IO is back at work (woohoo!) he really wants to get away.  I personally would rather wait until October, but the IO isn't a wait and see kind of guy.  I just don't want to go anywhere that requires walking around outside.

I am thankful... the IO is employed

In the kitchen... tonight's dinner is a roasted chicken and tomorrow I will make some homemade tomato sauce for raviolis and thin spaghetti.  I am in the mood for some black beans and rice but I have no desire to make it right now.  I wish I had a Pollo Tropical closer.

I am wearing... a big baggy t-shirt that says:  "If things get better with age, I'm approaching magnificent!"    And yes I AM aware it is almost 2 in the afternoon and I'm still in my pjs.....

I am creating... I have continued on the pair of socks I started over the wknd.  They are a short cuff (abt 13 rows of cuff to be exact) and I'm already on the gusset of Sock #1.  I'll take a pic once the sock is finished.  I'm also itching to pick up some cross stitch.  Havent done any of that in awhile.....

I am going... to look thru my pile of current projects to see what I can accomplish today.

I am wondering... how is it already July??  I really don't know where the year is going.

I am reading... blogs and news websites.   And then I need to leave them to play games on Facebook because this world can be mentally exhausting!

I am hoping... my energy level picks up.  I REALLY don't feel like doing much and it's starting to show....

I am looking forward to... the IO's first paycheck.  I know I've been rambling on abt him going back to work lately but he's been out of work for 7 months.  SEVEN. MONTHS!  That is a very long time.  I'm looking forward to catching up on bills.

I am learning..  that poorer ppl are usually more generous than richer ones.

Around the house...HA!!!  remember when I said I lacked energy??  That has translated to the state of the house.

I am pondering... a physical.  I'm thinking the lack of energy is from being overweight and having too much stress in my life, but it's always good to start with a clean slate.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things...
Right now it's NOT blogger!!!  It's giving me trouble as I'm trying to add pictures to this post.....

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Saturday a friend of mine is having  a BBQ so we'll be heading over to her house.  I'm bringing a pasta salad.  Now to find the one I like.  Anybody got any good ones they'd like to share?  I'm looking for an oil based one, not a mayo based one.

A peek into my day...I've got a load of laundry going and I have a feeling today is going to be one of those days where I need to set the timer to get anything done.  Watch an episode of Castle, work in the kitchen for 15 min.  Watch a couple of Whose Line Is It Anyway, then 15 min in the living room....
