The Home Stretch

So how is it possible that we are about to start April?  I just spent some time getting myself organized for the final 9 weeks of school and I just kept shaking my head.  I can't believe we are already at the end of the school year.  And I KNOW it will go fast since this is when we have all the concerts and competitions and field trips.  Fun and exhausting times are ahead!

Today is also the last day of Spring Break.   We've had a busy week with only one day of doing nothing.  Oh wait, that one day was for ME!  I hadn't stopped for over a week so I took Saturday off.  That meant I did not change out of my pjs.  I did not cook.  I did not  clean.  I did not take children anywhere.  There was food in the house and Baby Girl went off to see a friend where the IO dropped her off and the mom brought her home.

It was wonderful.

Since I didn't do any mommy duties that day, I had time to work on Too Pooped.

It is completely stitched, but not yet complete.  I have the backstitching to finish.  There is quite a bit to do, but not so much that it's going to take me a month to finish it.  I'm hoping it will be done by next week, but realistically it will be more like two.  I will post a final pic of it complete.  I'm not a big fan of backstitching but I LOVE the way it makes it look.  Makes the piece really pop!!

I did take the time to take my sky pictures and it was rainy all afternoon.  Another reason why I took the day for me.  Perfect lounging weather.
It was hard not to do the same on Sunday even though it was nice and sunny.

Hope everybody had a great weekend  and stayed warm and dry (hard to do in some places).

The Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window... it was another gorgeous day.   It was supposed to be rainy and it started out cloudy, but it turned into a nice sunny day, cool enough to open the windows to air the house out.

I am thinking... that this is turning into an expensive Spring Break!  So far we have been to two plays (one play twice to be more specific), one movie (our movies are $10 a pop and that's before snacks!) out to dinner three times, grocery shopping for the week, and clothes shopping twice.  Oh and we got a saucer chair for the family room.  This is when I miss that double income....
I am also thinking that I've hit my 90 day mark from my surgery.  I'm definitely feeling much better, but I'm also realizing that me feeling normal is a new type of normal.  Some things are better, others will be an adjustment.

I am thankful... for my family.  No one can make me crazier, but I'll never give them up.

In the kitchen... I actually made up a menu for this week to follow since the kids are out on spring break and I have yet to follow it!!!  I've made dinner yesterday and today, just not what I originally planned.  However I still made dinner so I consider that a win!!!  Cow yesterday and Pig tonight.  Tomorrow is chicken.  That will be the extent of the farm.  I've never been a big sheep person unless it involved their wool.

I am wearing... a big blue t-shirt.  I'm already in my pjs.

I am creating... I finished two more charity blankets for the Ravelry group Eastern Region Oddball Baby Blankets.
Lovely Layers

Yikes Love Those Stripes!
Now that these are done I need to figure out what to work on next.

I am going... to get rid of one more box tomorrow!

I am wondering... if I'll ever be unpacked.  Maybe when the kids move out....

I am reading... phfttttt!

I am hoping... I am doing the right things for my kids.  Parenting is a lot harder than I expected and some days it feels as if I'm failing at it.  The problem with parenting is you never know how poorly you are doing until much later on.  I know I'm a good parent, but there are areas that I feel I lack in.  I know, I'm your typical mom who worries, but it's still something I hope for.

I am looking forward to... Friday.  I have friends coming over during the day.  Plus it looks as if we might get another date night Friday night.

I am hearing..... the hum of the bathroom fan.  Everybody else is in bed so it's quiet.

Around the house... hmmmm.  I have yet to plant my tomato plants or my petunias or my bougainvillea.  I DO have a welcome mat with an owl that says WHOOOOO goes there!   It makes me smile every time!

I am pondering... how it's not my mother's voice or my grandmother's voice that I hear in my head these days; its my grandfather's.  And it's always when I'm at the grocery store.   I have turned into him.  It makes me nuts when I go grocery shopping and the prices keep going up.  The gas would give him a heart attack.  Remember how I complained abt the cost of milk a month ago?  It was $4.09 and I abt had a fit.  This past Monday it was up another dime to $4.19.  From the comments I got from that post, my milk is cheaper that some, but it still makes me nuts to pay that much.
OMG I sound like my grandfather.....

A favorite quote for today...
Which is why when I woke up at 7am I rolled over and slept in until NOON!!! Apparently I was tired.

One of my favorite things  AKA Hemi's corner....
How you doin'!
A few plans for the rest of the week: well I will be redoing a load of laundry since I'm just now remember it's still in the washer.  More laundry and getting the house pulled together for company on Friday.

A peek into my day... it's been a busy 4 days.  Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday were FULL days.  We were going from mid morning until late that night.  I really wanted today to be quiet, but I got a coupon emailed to me for an additional 50% off clearance stuff at Beall's (a Florida dept store).  I just bought stuff there yesterday so we went back to get our 50% off of that stuff AND of course we bought a few more things today.  Kids have new clothes and I saved money while doing it!
So there you have it, another SWD for the books!  If you want to play, go here.

The Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window... it is the first day of spring and it will be feeling like it!!!  It's sunny and warm and we expect a high of 78 by the afternoon.  According to my thermometer it is 68 right now.  (hmm I felt a disturbance in the force.  Many bloggers have feelings that will move them to the dark side if they aren't careful.  I am sending virtual warmth to quiet the disturbance down.....)

I am thinking... that I need to pay some bills.  I hate paying bills.  Then again I don't know many people who do.......

I am thankful... that the IO has a job so that I can pay those bills.  Money is still tight, but we're not starving.  Or hungry.  Well maybe a little hungry, it's time for lunch!

In the kitchen... I made a few changes to my roasted chicken last night which were not a hit.  I have a new spice container that is used to flavor olive oil to dip bread into (Publix was having a food demo and WOW is it good!) so I decided to add it to my chicken.  Everybody ate it but there were comments that said they preferred the other way better.  I will leave those spices for the dipping bread.   I also roasted some Brussels sprouts and onions.  Onions were YUMMY.  Brussels sprouts not so much.  Tonight's dinner is Beef and Cheddar Casserole.  I make a few changes to it by using up my spaghetti sauce and leaving out the bell pepper and scallions.  I may start it early so I can just stick it in the oven later on tonight.

I am wearing... my red San Diego Zoo t-shirt and a blue flannel.  It was chilly this AM when I took the kids to school and threw on a robe as well (yes I'm one of THOSE moms!)  I'm also wearing an orange cat.  Orange is the new black!

I am creating... more charity blankets.  I finished my portion of The Blues and Light Me Up and I have two more to work on.  Once these are done I have my name on one more and that will probably be it for awhile.  While I enjoy working on the charity blankets, it keeps me from my other projects and it can get pricey when mailing it out to the next person.
The Blues

Light Me Up!
I am going... with the kids to the local theatre to see The Music Man Jr.  They have a youth program that is fantastic and a lot of #1 Son's and Baby Girl's friends are in it.  We will be seeing it twice tomorrow, once in the morning and again that night.  I will be singing the songs the rest of the wknd!

I am wondering... if and when my leg will stop bothering me.  Apparently I had some nerves damaged during the surgery and now I have what is called Meralgia Paraesthetica.

Meralgia paraesthetica is a nerve (neurological) condition that causes an area of skin over the upper outer thigh to become painful, numb or tingly.

I have all three symptoms.    Some days are better than others, but I've noticed that cold air makes it worse.   I usually love the colder days, but this year has been rough.  Between my thigh and my incisions, cold air is the enemy!!!  I haven't gone walking in almost a week and I really need to get back to it.  It makes me feel so much better!

I am reading... I'm trying to keep up with my blogs.  I'm also reading some Fanfiction on line.

I am hoping... that spring break goes well

I am looking forward to... Spring Break!  We've got some things planned already, which means that the quiet days should not be wrought with sibling arguing....

I am hearing..... the bathroom fan and snorts from Hemi.

Around the house... three more boxes are gone and the china is put away.  So are the fancy wine glasses.  I still have 4 or 5 boxes of bigger items that need  a home.  Not sure what I will keep and what  will stay.

I am pondering... the news.  I feel for the people in the Ukraine.  It seems as if  we're reliving the Cold War years all over again.  I also feel for the people who are waiting for news about their families on Flight 370.  While I hope for a happy outcome, I pray for closure for everyone involved.  Better to know the truth (no matter how bad) than to know nothing at all.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things  AKA Hemi's Corner.......

A few plans for the rest of the week:  Spring Break starts this wknd and I am looking forward to it!  We've got the plays tomorrow, I'm trying to plan a bowling day with their friends, we've got a couple of movies we want to see (including a double feature at a drive in!) and I'm having people over next Friday.  It's going to be a busy one!!!

A peek into my day... now THIS is how you relax!!
Thanks for stopping by!  If you want to play, go here.

Saturday Sky

Today #1 Son had a band competition and his school got straight superiors!!!  This means we are going to State sometime in May.  I'd be sharing pictures of the event but I didn't get one.

However I did get a picture of my Saturday Sky.

We were headed home after dinner and I made a U-turn once I saw the sun setting over the lake.  Gorgeous!!!

I also have a finish to share, a charity blanket from The Eastern Regional Oddball Blanket group on Ravelry.

Mine is the top light blue.  I'm almost done with blanket #2, and I got two more waiting for me!!  I signed up for a few blankets over the past month because I wasn't getting any in the mail, so of course they all show up at once!!

Hope everybody is having a great wknd!!

The Simple Woman's Daybook

Outside my window...If I could bottle today's weather, I would.  It was the perfect day.  It was VERY rainy this AM, but by the afternoon it was gorgeous.  The thermometer said it was 78, but it must have been very low in humidity because it was VERY comfortable, plus we had a cool breeze thruout the whole house.  Absolutely beautiful.  The windows are still open and the cats are enjoying the cool breezes from the yard.

I am thinking... that it's been awhile since I've taken the cats to the vet.  I need to double check when they last went, plus Princess REALLY needs her teeth cleaned.  Her gums tend to get inflamed and she can get really bad breath!

I am thankful... that I am really starting to feel better.  I still get twinges and my scars irritate me thruout the day, but for the most part I am starting to feel like my old self.  My energy level is almost back to normal, I can almost bend and grab something from the floor (I still have to squat, but not as much).  I will do it automatically and afterward realized what I had done!  LOVE that part!  One thing I have noticed is that walking really makes a difference for me and how I feel.  If I let too many days go by w/o walking, my body feels it.  It gives me incentive to move!

In the kitchen... I'm kind of sick of chicken (we eat a LOT of it!) so yesterday I made some burgers (SO good) and tonight's dinner is beef stew, rice and corn.  Simple and yummy.

I am wearing... a big blue t-shirt and grey shorts

I am creating... I have switched gears to working on my charity blanket.  Another 18 rows of garter and it will be done.  I plan on working on it tonight while I catch up on my dvr'd shows.

I am going... to start cleaning out the garage.  Even if that means breaking down the extra boxes and putting them in the recycling bin.  It's time.

I am wondering... what to make that's a gluten free main meal.  We are having some ppl over for lunch and the wife is gluten free.  Any suggestions?

I am reading... blogs.  I miss reading them.  Honestly I spend way too much time on Facebook, esp their games.  They SUCK me in and it's hard to get out.......

I am hoping... to eventually tackle the bins of fabric that are stashed in the garage.  The weather has been good, but once it gets really hot and muggy, I don't want the stash to get ruined.

I am looking forward to... Spring Break.  Ours will be at the end of March.

I am hearing.... right now, not much.  No tv, no radio, no talking.

Around the house... we've needed to have some things fixed ever since we've moved in back in November, but I'm just now getting around to calling it into the property management ppl.  This is the PLUS of renting instead of owning.  I make a phone call, a plumber shows up at 8pm and I don't have to pay for it!!  I'm waiting for them to send somebody out for my stove.  The biggest burner doesn't work and there are some pans I cant use because of it.

I am pondering... the wisdom behind Daylight Savings Time.  I don't care for it.  Actually it's the losing of the hour I despise.  It really has an effect on me.  Yes I could go to be earlier, but I'm a night person, this does NOT work for me.  So Monday night I'm staring at the clock and it's staring back with 12:23AM as the time.  My mind is saying I need to get to bed, but my body is saying I have another half hour to go.  I'll be fine by next week, but my thing is, pick a time and leave it.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things  AKA Hemi's Corner....
They both think they are up against me!!

A few plans for the rest of the week:  #1 Son has a band competition on Saturday that I will be chaperoning.  It will be my first one since the surgery and I'm thankful that it's a short day.  We need to arrive by 11am (which means some decent sleep) and we'll be  home by 6pm (which means I shouldn't be dead).

A peek into my day... #1 Son stayed home today, not sure if his allergies are REALLY or if he's fighting a cold, but he hasn't been feeling well today.  AND the IO decided to take a mental health day.  This means in order for all to rest, I had to be quiet.  No cleaning, no going thru boxes, no nothing.  Normally this would be fine, but I was *ITCHING* to work on the kitchen which would be really noisy so I didn't do it.  I finally left the house to go to Target.  After walking around a bit, I could feel myself de-stress and I felt much better.  I got home when Baby Girl did and by then everybody was up.  Still a quiet day, but by the afternoon, I didn't mind.
So there you have it, Wednesday's version of my daybook.  If you want to play, go here.

Weekend Update

I seriously do NOT know where the time goes.   I was mentally preparing my Simple Woman's Daybook and BAM! it's almost a week later!  I'm either running around like a maniac (which I shouldn't be doing yet) OR I'm recovering from running around like a maniac!  When I feel good I just roll with it, trying to get as much done as I can.  However when I do that I'm usually down a day or two later.  I'm not making myself worse so that's all I really care about!

Plus those downtimes can prove to be productive!!!  I decided to pull out another cross stitch from the pile, Too Pooped.  She's another oldie but goodie (2006 I think), but I really want to get her done.  I still really like her and can see her finished on the wall.  Here she was the last time I worked on her back in September 2013

Here she is as of today

I have the birds and the rest of the tree underneath it to finish and the stitching will be done.  THEN the backstitching.....  I am getting excited abt it though since I can really see the end in sight!  I haven't knit in over a week because I've been working on this guy!  However I do need to switch gears since I have some rotating charity blankets to complete.  This has a LOT of browns in it and while not a LOT of confetti knitting, I do change colors a lot.  Let's hope I pick it back up after the blankets are done.

What else is happening here at Casa del Rio?  (trying out a new name, Happy Acres doesn't seem to fit anymore)  Well it is March which means I'm itching to get in the garden.  I went to Lowes and got these guys

There is a small ornamental tree for the front porch and a couple of bags of dirt that aren't in the pic, but you get the idea.  I bought another bougainvillea to plant in the back yard to cover this area.

It's the only part of the backyard that can be seen from the road and I'd like to add *something* for a bit more privacy.  I also got some tomato plants and abt 30 petunias.  The lady gave me the petunias for a dime a piece!!!  Gotta love knowing the plant manager!!  It's a great deal, the only problem is I now have to PLANT all these things!!  AND they have to go in the back.  The front yard is shaded by an oak tree which means I need to rethink what I want to plant there.

I've been in the kitchen a lot lately, the yummiest being some butter braid I bought from Baby Girl's band fund raiser.  It's a sweet bread that is GOOD!

It's HUGE but I just cut it into fourths and we have at it!  There is never anything left.

Friday I went to a quilt show with a friend of mine (more on that later in the week) and Saturday the IO and I finally got to go out for dinner to celebrate our anniversary.  Since I was just getting home from surgery when it was our anniversary, we couldn't do much.  So last night my sister took the kids and we went out to a local restaurant.  The view and company were wonderful.

Hope everybody had a great weekend!!! (even if we had to lose an hour)
