Not Even Close

While I was doing pretty well in the beginning for NaBloPoMo, life does get in the way.   Mentally I've posted four more times, but until they come up with a way to post via brain waves, they just swirl around in the grey matter.

Since the last time I've posted, we've had concerts, field trips, plays, volunteering and just normal insanity.

The field trip involved a bit of a drive so I cast on for a kitty blanket.  This is 2 skeins in.

I also (please be seated and put down all food and drinks) finished a project.

Yes you read that right!!!  I finished a project!!!!  And not just any project.  A cross stitch!!!!

Kitty Cat Row is complete.  It only took me 4 1/2  years.

Kitty Cat Row in all it's glory!

mouse with a perfect little colonial knot for a nose

mouse with a less than perfect colonial knot.  I say it's sticking out its tongue at the other cats

Here are the stats:

Kitty Cat Row by Bent Creek

Date start:  early 3/11
Date end:  11/26/15

Stitched on 28ct linen in Sand over two.

No substitutions with floss were made.  I used all the specialty threads listed.

As I was finishing up the backstitching, my eyes were reminding me that they aren't as young as they used to be.  Bright light and readers were involved.  Makes me question the completion of other linen projects.  Regardless of blindness, I HAVE A FINISH!!!

Lets see how long before I have it framed.......

Moving Right Along

I've made progress on my sock.

I'm half way thru the heel.

I also pulled this out.

Baby Girl is in the National Junior Honor Society and they are having a supply drive for the local animal shelters.  After a few phone calls it was determined that they need food, towels, laundry detergent and BLANKETS!  That's where I come in.

Normally I knit up a couple of blankets every year for the local humane society, but last year was a real crazy year and I didnt get to do any. This drive got me itching to cast on for a blanket (or 2 depending on the deadline)  I've already cast on and did a couple of rows  We have a field trip tomorrow and I'm hoping to knit a bit on the drive there.  I'm hoping to have it done by Sunday.

And if any of you feel the urge to cast on for a blanket or cat toys, follow that urge and send them to me!   It would be wonderful to have a huge amt of knitted items to donate.  Let me know.

More yarn-y fun

Before I fixed the toe on that last sock, I actually cast on for another one abt a week ago.  It's been slow going, but I'm making progress.

Yarn is Sweet Georgia Brown, not sure of color.

This is sock #2 of a pair I started in 2014.  Hopefully I will get it done before the spring.

The Life of a Sock

Back in 2005, I began to knit socks.  I started with baby socks and decided to progress to a grown up pair for myself.

I followed the instructions on the Regia 6 yarn band which said to use a size 3 needle.  They weren't tight enough and they never really fit right.  I would wear them, but they eventually would work their way to the back of the drawer as I made other socks for myself.

Fast forward to 2013.  I decide that I don't want a pair of socks that I can't wear.  I don't want to throw them out so instead I unravel it.  NOT an easy job considering I've worn and washed them enough that the yarn had felted in spots.  I press on because I am stubborn and will NOT let this yarn get the better of me!!

I rewind the yarn, cast on using size 2 needles and add some additional sport weight grey Regia  and some leftover sport weight Lorna's Laces for the heels and toes.

A little bit of this and a little bit of that....

Present day.  It is 2015 and we have had a cool front go thru that actually dropped the temps into the 60s at night.  That's when I pull out my socks.  This is what I find.

I inspect the rest of the sock and it's fine.  So I do this instead.

I cut off the offending yarn and cast on with another.  I had some left over sport weight  Knit Picks  in Cranberry (I think).  And I have a sock that should last for a little longer.

The other sock looks fine, I'm not sure why this one wore thru.  I've already looked for little bugs in the drawer and it's all clear.

These socks really are a patchwork of sorts.  I've also learned that Regia yarn wears like IRON!

Day 12

My way of traveling right now is vicariously thru you, my dear reader.  I enjoy pictures of different parts of the US, but I especially love places in Europe.  Europe is old.  I mean REALLY old!  Buildings that have been standing for hundreds of years.

America is a fairly new country.  The oldest spots are less than 300 years old (for the most part)  Plus people in America want NEW! and IMPROVED!!  When we were looking at houses, the older ones were the ones we liked the best.  They have more character and we like that.

Ok not much architecture in this dwelling built 5500yrs ago, but the view is fantastic!

So as I read thru my blogroll I see that Bonnie is in Peru and Jan went to Latvia and Finland and Estonia.  She said in one of the towns MOST of the buildings were from the 13th-16th centuries.  VERY cool!!

I also enjoy House Hunters International.  The episodes where people are looking for a place to live, NOT vacation.  Those bug me.

University of Northwestern University Hall 1869

So what do you do when you want to travel?  Search on line?  Watch foreign movies?  Make an excuse to visit family out of state??

Just Like That

When #1 Son was born, he was a very hands on child.  He had eczema and teething was really hard on him.  REALLY hard.  His highest fevers were just before a tooth would pop thru.  Doctors can say that fevers with teething are coinidental, but that boy NEVER had a high fever unless he was teething.

side note:  he had a high fever a couple of years ago and it really surprised me.  I happened to say to him that the only times he ever had a high fever was when he was teething.  He said he had a molar breaking thru in the back.  The next day his fever was gone and his tooth was thru.

By the time he was two, his eczema was under control and he had all his teeth in.  He never went thru the terrible twos.  He was calm and happy.

Just like that.

When Baby Girl was born, she had to keep up with her brother.  Physically, not so much (she didnt walk until she was 13 months old, just like #1 Son) but on an intellectual level, she wanted to keep up.  I was never allowed to read to her.  SHE had to read to ME.  She didnt want to watch Blue's Clues, she wanted to watch Jimmy Neutron.

We were very busy and then suddenly both kids were in school and things quieted down a bit.

Just like that.

I reflect on those moments in time.  Right now I am beyond busy with the majority of stuff being school related.  I'm trying to keep up with activities in middle and high school, theatre, making some side money to afford said activities, not to mention cleaning, laundry, etc.  It's alot.  Some days it feels overwhelming.  Like they will never end, but I know they will.

So while I'm slowly working on an ulcer and shopping thrift stores and driving a clunker, I am truly enjoying every minute of it.  It will be gone in a heart beat.

Just like that.

We were having problems with our a/c (AGAIN) (this is Florida and we are breaking heat records left and right!) so soon after I dropped Baby Girl off at school, #1 Son and I decided to get out of the house for a bit.  We went geocaching and did some hiking along some of the local trails.

We also decided to drive to a  town that we hardly ever get a chance to go to.

He's such a good son to humor his mother!

I love this area and really need to visit it more.

It's quite peaceful when nobody is around!

My view from that bench

He was fishing with little concern of us being there!

They have a boardwalk with trails around the lake that are really nice.  It was SO peaceful and the breeze coming off the lake made the walk really pleasant.  It was misty and cloudy and such a nice break from the heat.  When we got home it was much more humid and warm, but I totally enjoyed my daycation with my boy.

Cleaning out the fridge

I love left overs.  I love taking what is left of a meal and making something out of it the next day.  I especially love when there is a meat or a veggie left over, no matter how much.  It might not be much for a serving, but throw it in some eggs and BOOM you have an omelette!!

I had a burger left over from dinner the other night and nobody ate it the next day.  So I crumbled it up, and started to clean out the fridge.  Some left over kale here, a few mushrooms there.  Throw in some garlic and hot pepper flakes for flavor.  Scramble in some eggs and top it all off with the last piece of swiss cheese.  I even toasted up the bun the burger was on.

Breakfast is served!!

Any left over starch like pasta or rice needs some kind of sauce.  And I've found that frozen potatoes (like french fries or tots) dont heat up well the next day.  They need to be the real deal to taste good.

So where do you stand?  Are leftovers something to be excited abt, just waiting for a second chance in a meal, or do they sit in the back of the fridge slowly becoming a science experiment?

Saturday Sky on a Sunday Afternoon

While I really wanted to try and post every day, I knew it was going to be hard yesterday.  Friday night was Senior Night and 8th Grade Night at the high school and Saturday was MPA, the district competition that we shoot for all season.

8th Grade night went really well.

SOOOO ready for high school!

Acting goofy.

And so did MPA. My Saturday sky while they warmed up.

#1 Son is second from the left

Speaking of warm, it was SO hot.

Check out that real feel people!!

We had one person taken to the ER and 6 or 7 others ended up in First Aid.  The majority of them were freshman who still havent gotten the concept of hydrating all week long, not just as the games.  Last year we froze, the year before that it poured.  Next year should be a hurricane (hurricane season doesnt end until the end of Nov)

Regardless of the weather they did fantastic at MPA with straight superiors.

2015 Marching Band Season is in the books.

Day 5

There is something about an aisle of yarn that is soothing and relaxing.

Even if it includes Red Heart.

I blame the time change.....

My internal clock still hasn't changed to EST.  So instead of being used to waking up at 6:40 to take #1 Son to school, I am waking up at 5:40am.  Not so much fun for a night owl.  As I'm laying in bed deciding to get up or go back to sleep, the IO wakes me up.  He cant find something and hates to wake me up but he needs it for work.  I told him where it was, but being a man, he cant find it so I get up to get it.  No worries, I'm already up anyway.  What he is looking for is stored under the staircase and when he is apologizing again for getting me out of bed, I tell  him not to worry abt it, I'm alrea-   BAM!

I hit my head on the sloping part of the ceiling where the stairs are.  I hit my head HARD!  Not "wow that hurt let me keep getting what you need" hard but hard enough to see stars.  Hard enough to feel the impact and then feel my scull absorb the rest of the energy to protect my brain.  Hard enough to stand there a bit to take it all in.

Hard enough to imagine my head as a crumple zone in a tv commercial for a good quality car.

Once the stars have passed, I google what does a concussion feel like.  I didn't think I had one but I wanted to be sure.  Of course WebMD has me dying in an hour, but I ignore that part and keep reading.  I'm not nauseous or dizzy or throwing up.  I don't even have a headache.

In spite of what WebMD says, I'm gonna live.

I go back to bed but decide to stay up to make sure I'm ok.  I checked out instagram and then read a couple of chapters of my book (which according to Baby Girl you should NEVER do when you have a concussion) and since I had no symptions show up (including blurry vision) I went back to sleep.

What did slamming my head first thing in the morning do?  It made me realize that the day can only get better from here.  Even when I thought I was out of coffee (I wasnt) and half and half (I was), it wasn't a big deal.

It also proves I have a hard head!

You look fine to me.  BTW the food bowl is empty.

For Today...

Outside my window... HEAT!  We broke heat records in Daytona (high of 90 with a previous record of 89) and near heat records in Ocala and Orlando.  It's NOVEMBER!!  "They" said we would have a colder, wetter winter.  Apparently it will only be for a day.  Right now at 10:30am my phone weather app says it's 81 with a real feel of 94.  The high is expected to be 89.  Humidity is also high.  Blech.

I am thinking... our last band competition is on Saturday.  Last year we FROZE.  The morning had a wind chill of 36.  It hit the 50s during the day.  This year we will bake.  We are expecting a high of 86.  Florida has bipolar weather.

I am thankful... for a/c.  I am thankful for this often.  I live in Florida.

I am wearing... jammies.  I had an appt earlier that required me to put clothes on, but it got cancelled.  I immediately changed back into jammies.  That's how I roll.

I am creating... honestly, nothing.  I want to work on some socks and the sweater (you know, for that colder, wetter winter we will have) but there just isnt the time.  And when there is the time, I dont have the brain.

I am going... to the last home game for marching band season on Friday.  It will be an emotional one since it is 8th Grade Night and Senior night.  It's always hard to say goodbye to the seniors.  And it signifies the end of Marching season.

I am wondering... when it will cool down.  I look forward to some cloudy days.  Florida Sun can be intense!

I am reading... I actually have something to post!!!  I get emails with special offers of books to download to my Kindle (which is older than dirt btw) and I focus on the free.  I downloaded Honeymooning - A Cypress Hollow Short Story.  It was a good story and when I went to check on her other books, I apparently have the first one in her series! How To Knit A Love Song.  I just need to find it.

Meanwhile I started Five Minute Late.  All of these books are light reads, nothing life changing.  This is why I like them.  A few minutes to shut out the world and enjoy the ride of the story, no matter how unpredictable.

I miss reading.

I am hoping...for so many thing.  That we dont melt on Saturday.  That my kids have happy lives.  That I can clean out the fabric bins.  That we have cooler weather.  That those in far off lands find peace.  I figure as long as there is hope, we can do anything.

I am hearing... the hum of the bathroom fan.  It is quiet in the house and I'm enjoying it!

In my garden... I would like to start an herb garden.  Something in containers that can be moved in and out depending on what the weather is.

In my kitchen... I need to figure out what to make for dinner.  When I plan my week for food, it does make it easier to make dinner than to just stare into the fridge and be creative at 5:45pm.

A favorite quote for today...

A peek into my week... band, cleaning, PTO meeting, figuring out what to make for dinner.

One of my favorite things aka Hemi's Corner...

Day 2

As I was catching up on blog reading, CJ from Above The River posted some pictures of a castle.  This got me thinking, visiting a castle has to be added to my bucket list.  I've always been fascinated by them and would love to actually stay in one.  I've mentioned this to the IO, but he has no desire.  He thinks it will be cold and damp.  I dont want to LIVE in one, I just want to stay in one!  That's ok, Baby Girl will most likely be my travel partner when she gets older.  She already wants to go to Sweden and I'm sure I can find a drafty old castle in the country somewhere. (I just googled it and there are plenty)  That is, after we stay here.

I guess everything is on the rocks.....

After I left her blog, I started looking on line and found this place. Chateau Gudanes .  It is an old rundown castle that an Australian couple bought and are now renovating.  I cant even imagine.  Gutting a bathroom is one thing, restoring a castle is a life long endeavor.

But it is a beauty.

What travel plans would you love to take?

NaBloPoMo Begins.....

So I've had the insane idea of joining NaBloPoMo and posting every day this month.  Why not?  I have nothing else going on in my life!!!

(insert maniacal laughter here)

Actually I plan on doing this.  Every day.  For a month.  It's you, dear readers, that will have the challenge.

What mundane drivel will she spew today??

You'll just have to tune in to find out!

It is November 1st, which means if you have a physical calendar, you should have a new picture to look at.  This is mine.

What does yours look like??

We also had the time change today.  How do you feel abt that??

I still wish they would pick a time and stick with it.  I will feel off for a week!

And while we arent much into holidays around here, we do have fun!  Friday was our last away game.  We got TROUNCED with a final score of 56-0, but us band people had a blast!!  Us parents were up dancing with our band while they played songs from the 80s.  It was the other school's homecoming so we didnt get a chance to march, but our band did play their show music.  Fantastic as always!!  Friday will be our last home game which includes Senior Night (a farewell to our seniors) and 8th Grade Night (a chance of our incoming Freshman to experience the fun and comraderie of marching band)  Baby Girl will be there.  It's very odd to think that I will have kids only in high school next year.

Saturday we met up with some friends at a local go cart establishment.  On Halloween they have half priced tix and boy was it crowded!!  I took a lot of pictures that night, but most of them are blurry (my phone does not take action shots very well) but there were a few that I liked.  This is my favorite one.

Love these kids.

Better stop rambling now if I want to have material for the upcoming week!!  If you are planning on participating in NaBloPoMo, let me know in the comments.

Taking the Morning Off

Normally after I take Baby Girl to school I start the chores for the day.  I have the tv on and I will start to clean or organize something.  Or plan or prepare for an upcoming event.  Life has become quite hectic and I'm feeling the pressure.  Many moons ago I used to read.  I used to cross stitch.  I used to quilt.  I used to knit.

Notice how those sentences start with I used to.  Also notice how those were things I did for me.

I've decided to reclaim some of those things back for me. Today instead of starting laundry/cleaning/organizing, I decided to take the morning off.  There is no tv on.  No radio is playing in the background.  No lights are on in the house.  I have the windows open and it's raining.  It's quiet and calm and fresh.

Princess is enjoying the rain as well.

Just what the doctor ordered.

Yes I do have my computer on, but I have only read blogs this morning.  No news sites.  No Facebook.  The blogs I read are crafty.

Oh that's a beautiful quilt!

I LOVE that idea for the front porch!!

Look, NaBloPoMo is starting.

Wait, what???  Why yes, NaBloPoMo, National Blog Posting Month.  A month where you post something every day.  I used to do that!  So, in the spirit of reclaiming some of the things I used to do, I am going to attempt to post every day in November.

We'll see how that works out!

Meanwhile I am going to read a bit while there is still some calmness to the day.

Have a good one!!

For Today...

Outside my window...

It's cloudy and a bit drizzly.  We've got a low sitting over us and a cool front coming thru.

I am thinking... about how I need to go here.

Life is too stressful and this seems like a nice area to breathe.

I am thankful... for an on the ball guidance counselor.  He is trying to be helpful on an individual scale instead of making my kid fit into a prefab box.

I am wearing... pajamas.  I was in regular clothes earlier but I went back into pjs.  It's that kind of day.

I am creating... nothing new but I want to cast on for the front of my sweater.

I am going... to be more choosy with whom I share my problems with.  Everybody has an opinion and can be quite forceful with said opinion.  Asking for an opinion does not mean I need you to decide for me.  Another reason why I'm back in my pjs.

I am wondering... If I will ever live out of state again.  Hmm, I probably just need to travel more.

I am reading... a mindless Harlequinn Romance.  Not sure which one, but they are all pretty much the same.

I am hoping... to do more geocaching.  Now that the weather is getting a bit cooler (ok, less hot) I want to get out there more.

I am hearing... The Chew is on tv.

In my garden... nothing yet, but the IO cleaned up the front of the house; weeded, raked leaves, edged, trimmed bushes.  It looks fantastic, except for the pile of weeds, leaves and cut shrubbery that is on my driveway.

In my kitchen... I made some home made mac and cheese with ham last night for dinner with a side of kale.  It was GOOD!  I made a smaller gluten free version for Baby Girl but it didnt go over so well.

A favorite quote for today...

One of my favorite things aka Hemi's Corner...

Not sure if I posted this before, but it makes me smile so up it goes!!

Ok friends, if you want to play go here.  And thanks for reading!

Tuesday, October 20, 2015

For Today...

Outside my window... we've had some really nice days.  I've actually been able to open the windows and air the house out!!  I so look forward to cooler days.

I am thinking... that Baby Girl is in her last year of middle school and that I will soon have two kids in high school.  That is wild.

I am thankful... for many things.  For my health, both physical and mental.  For a home.  For a family.  When life gets overwhelming, I remember I'm not running for my life in Syria.  Plus it helps to know where I'm living.

I am wearing... pjs.

I am creating... solace out of a chaotic life.  At least trying to.

I am going... thru my closet and decided that the candles I bought 5 years ago and the baby outfits that I bought 8 years ago need to go.

I am wondering... when the HOA is going to post abt a community yard sale.  They have one twice a year and I never put anything out.  I plan on changing that this year.  I may not be moving, but I do want to go thru my stuff and get rid of a lot of it!  I have two laundry baskets full of stuff to sell on ebay.  I have 3 garbage bags that I will attempt to sell at the yard sale, whatever doesn't sell will go to Goodwill.

I am watching.... Monday night tv.  Big Bang Theory at 8pm.  Switch over to Dancing With The Stars at 8:30 (I LOVE Bindi and ship her with Derek) and Castle at 10.  I am ignoring what the writers are doing to Caskett and instead focus on the murders.  Yesterday was a funny one.

I am hoping... that my dear loved one who struggles with depression and anxiety will feel better soon.

I am hearing... the bathroom fan and Hemi grooming himself.

In my garden... nothing at the moment, but it is Oct and I'm itching to put something together.  However, at the moment I have more incentive to purge than to plant.

In my kitchen... I've been cooking more, if for nothing else, to save some money.  It makes me nuts that it can cost $15 for two ppl to eat fast food.

A favorite quote for today...

This is more wild than the kids being in high school!!!

A peek into one of my days... it's been a busy month.  The kids were in Beauty and the Beast.

Then we've had band competitions.  Even when there is no school, we have a football game.  At least it's fun!!

One of my favorite things AKA Hemi ...

They are willing to share when it was chilly out.

Why these things take me 2 hours, I have no idea.  If you want to play, go here.
