The Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today

Looking Out My Window
It was hot today.  I think the weatherman said it's been in the 90s for the past 60 days.  Is it Oct yet??

I am thinking
about planning a road trip.  It's been a LONG time since we went on one and wanderlust is kicking into gear.  I've added a travel column to the budget.

I am thankful
that my kids still like to hang out with me.  We went to the mall last night to return some stuff and get #1 Son some pants.  AND we went geocaching!  I havent logged a cache since the end of February.

We had such a good time! I really want to remember days like this because I know they wont last forever.

I am wearing
a REALLY old sleep shirt

I am creating
garbage.  No really.  I'm slowly going thru piles in the apt and am amazed at what I still have

check out the year!

I thought twice abt getting rid of these magazines because I still want to read them.  However when I realized that I packed and moved them TWICE, it was time for them to go.  They are actually sitting on the counter with my library books.  Our library has a section for free magazines and they will hang out there until they find their forever home.  Apparently I was just fostering them....

I am Reading/Watching
I'm thinking of getting a book that I read when I was a kid again.  I did enjoy Nancy Drew.  I'm thinking Are You There God, It's Me Margaret or My Darling My Hamburger.  Thursday is our Literary Society meeting and I'm really looking forward to it.  I'm still watching Hogan's Heroes at night and I've been sucked into some Hallmark Channel shows.  The mysteries are my favorites!

I am Hoping
to knit a bit more often.  I havent touched my sock since last Tues.

I am Hearing
#1 Son is watching old episodes of How I Met Your Mother on Netflix and the downstairs neighbor is singing.  I dont know what she sings but it's always the same song.  ALWAYS.  She's not bad, but it never changes.  I will be putting my tv back on soon.

In My Kitchen
I actually made dinner tonight!  Grandma's Chicken to be exact!

Simple Woman's Daybook

For Today

Looking out my window

We have been having heavy rain showers every afternoon.  Nothing like Louisiana, but drenching nonetheless.

I am thinking
that I like the older version of the Daybook better than the revised one.  I made some changes in the post back to one I used back in 2015.

I am thankful
That I have a job.  That I have a working car.  That my kids are healthy. My job can be boring (on a daily basis), but it allows me the flexibility to take time off for family.  I drive a car as old as #1 Son and we have to share it, but it works.  My kids can make me crazy, but they are turning into productive humans.  Life may not be where I imagined it would be at almost 50, but it's SOO much better than it could be

I am wearing
A Mickey Mouse night shirt.  It's long, down to my knees, and I've been know to drive Baby Girl to school while wearing it.

I am creating

Socks.   I have turned the heel and will be starting the decreases for the foot next.

I am reading (read) /watching (watched) / listening to
The last book I read was Dave Ramsey's The Total Money Makeover.  It will most likely be the book I discuss at our first book club meeting next week.  Or Nancy Drew.  Or The Idiot's Guide to Knitting Sweaters.  While others will be discussing high brow books, I will be discussing knitting and drinking wine.  Sounds like a great night to me!!

I also continue to watch reruns of Hogan's Heroes before I go to sleep.  It's from the late 60s but it still holds up.

I am hoping
that life doesnt throw me any more surprises.  I need some consistency right now.

I am hearing
#1 Son on the phone with a friend. Hemi chirping at me to feed him.  The hum of the computer.

In my kitchen
right now I have a ton of dishes to do and a box of half eaten pizza from dinner.

In the school room
I already posted a pic of Baby Girl heading off to high school,  but I didnt post this one of #1 Son.

He is finishing off his senior year at a technical school and will most likely be done in abt a month.  He took a placement test and got a perfect score.  His counselor said she never saw anybody get a perfect score.  That's my boy!

In my garden
I have none.  I *could* plant some things in the front area of my apt, but I've tried twice, killing both things, one of them being a sunflower.  However I do have a basil plant growing at work!  It occasionally will get a haircut for a caprese salad at home.

What's on the Needles on a Saturday Afternoon

What's been going on??

This....

Baby Girl as Paulette in Legally Blonde Jr

#1 Son was a Delta Dude

First day of high school

Marching season has begun!

My life for the next 3 months.

Bringing the red back to life!

It's no wonder I'm getting nothing done.  However I cleared the schedule for the afternoon and decided to look at what projects I've got on the needles.  In no particular order....

1.Sweet Georgia Brown Socks

I started these back in May of 2014.  I am on the heel of the second sock.  It NEEDS to be done before the end of this year.

2.TV blanket

I started this around Oct of 2015 (I think) I cant seem to find a start date, I'm just going by what I've written down before and after it in my notebook.  I have 18" done in a 60" blanket.  I did literally one row today.  It's still too warm to keep it on my lap.  AND it holds on to floating cat hair.  But it's soft so I will continue with it.

3.Curvy Girl Cabled Cardigan

I started this in July 2015.  The back was done by Oct.  That's as far as I got.  Add the fact that we didnt get much of a winter either, there was no incentive to continue with a very heavy sweater while I'm still sweating in Jan.

4.Jester Hat

A premie hat I changed to be more of a newborn size.  I just need to add pompoms in the top two corners.

5.Moda Dea Baby Blanket (for now, it may become a kitty blanket)

I used the same yarn as the jester hat.  I have no baby in mind for it, just  wanted to work on something.

Last but not least are these cuties.

They should fit a 3 y/o.  Again I have no child  in mind for them, I just wanted to knit on an easy project.

And it wouldnt be a Saturday if I didnt post this.

So there you have it!  Lots started and little getting done.  Story of my life.  What are you working on?  Starting anything for the winter yet or is it still too hot where you live??

I Blame the Internet

I get an email from Berroco advertising a new pattern book.  Most of the time nothing really speaks to me and I delete it.

Not this time.

This one spoke to me.

I've been wanting to do this type of pattern for a long time.  Like years.  I measured a similar jacket/poncho a couple of years back when I was at Kohl's.  I couldnt decide what pattern I wanted to use or what colors or which yarn, so that scrap of paper just kept being pushed further and further into piles of projects to do.

Now I had a pattern and colors.

I bought the pattern and headed on line to figure out what yarn I wanted to use.  THAT was difficult.  Do you know how much yarn is out there?!!?!  Plus it seemed if I liked it, I couldn't afford it and if I could afford it, I didnt like it.

Until I came across LionBrand's Heartland.  Picked out colors and I was ready to go.  However I wanted to see it and feel it in person.  I'm still dropping a bit of coin on this yarn and since I will be wearing it, it has to be soft.  So off to Hobby Lobby I go!.  It's down the street from me and I knew they carried it.

I couldnt decide between these two combinations

but I finally decided on the blue combo one.  I wanted something similar to the colors chosen in the pattern.  However they didnt have enough of the dark brown so I decided to wait and check out JoAnn's so see their stock.  I was REALLY impressed that I was walking out without buying anything.  I was staying focused on the project at hand.

Then I turned around and saw this......

I think I audibly said, "Uh oh."

That's a LOT of yarn on sale 40% off.  I looked.  I pulled out.  I planned.

And then I put it all back!  Nothing really spoke  to me.  I could have bought some yarn for kitty blankets or charity hats, but I already have so much yarn for that I didnt feel the need to get it.  So I walked away.

Plus it helped that there was no sock yarn in the bins.

JoAnn's has enough of what I need so I will go back on Monday to take advantage of the sufficient amount, the 25% off sale AND my coupons.  Pictures to be posted as I go.

Happy Monday!

Mondays are actually quiet days at work.  I like that.  Thursdays and Fridays I liken to a colonoscopy.  Thursday is prep for the procedure on Friday.  My boss does not care for my analogy.

Another good thing abt today is that the check engine light in my car was an easy fix. A replaced sensor later and I'm good to go!  I'm happy it wasn't more involved.

I have a baby jester hat that I've knit.  I just need to add a pompom.  No pics.  I also have a couple of baby socks that are complete.  Also no pics.  I need to take pics during the day when it's sunny outside, but it's so warm I keep the blinds closed by noon.  So I need to be up and moving and taking pics by 10AM.  Its a very small window of opportunity.  Hence no pics.

However I do have a picture of the latest book I've read.

I'm trying to get myself back on track with money so I got this book from the library for inspiration.  What do I need to do?
1.  budget - had one for years
2.  have an emergency fund - working on that.
3.  pay down debt - working on that, too.

So I'm doing what I'm supposed to, however Dave does NOT mention how teenagers can suck the money right out of your acct!!!  I am paying bills, I have gas in a working car, I have food in the house, I have a roof over my head.

And I have a kitty in a basket.

I am WAY ahead of a lot of people.

Productive Saturday Sky with Bullet Points!

*I consider Monday the end of Summer Break.  Monday starts Theatre Camp.  Two weeks later Band Camp starts.  Band camp and theatre camp overlap.  They overlap to a point where during the last week of both camps,  they start at 9AM and won't be home until 9pm.  Long and busy days they will be.  Two days later school starts.  Both camps will be over, but a different theatre show will start rehearsals AND marching band season begins.  I'm not too sure how this is all going to play out, but we're going to try.   My calendars (yes plural) are up and ready to go.

Now you see why I consider this to be the last wknd of summer.

*Today is being spent getting things done inside.

Gorgeous day outside

but WAYYY too hot to be out in it.

Laundry is being done, kitchen is being cleaned.  Dinner will consist of left overs so the fridge is being cleaned out as well.  Paper work is being sorted.  Bills are being paid.  I'm hoping to put together a list of dinners to make during the next 4 weeks or so.  I'm trying to avoid drive thru food as much as possible.

*Knitting is happening here at Apartment Living.

Cat blanket finished up in June

bow for a JoAnn's kid class

Summer Coasters - made during an Open House at JoAnn's

Another sample for a JoAnn's class.  No pattern was given for this class so I made one up.  It highlights increasing and decreasing stitches.

I started this last night and hope to finish it tonight.

It's a baby Jester Hat from Knitting For Peace

*Last but not least, there is another licensed driver in the family.

#1 Son is now officially licensed to drive!  This comes in handy considering the upcoming weeks.  HE will be dropping me off and picking me up from work while he and Baby Girl do their thing.  Totally could use another car at this point, but we will make due for now.

Had to go out and celebrate!

Hemi is not impressed with any of this.

Rethinking This Decision

Back in January of this year, JoAnn's was advertising for a knitting teacher.  I immediately left my name for a call back.

Nothing.

A month later  (Feb) they are still looking for a knitting teacher so I asked again and was told I needed to talk to Nancy.  Guess who I was talking to??  Nancy!  She was the only cashier so she took my name and number and would call me back.

Nothing.

It is now April.  They are STILL looking for a knitting teacher and I wait for a manager.  Ten minutes later the manager tells me that Nancy left back in Feb and Peggy is now in charge. She will be right with me.  I have a seat.  FORTY-FIVE MINUTES LATER Peggy finally comes up to me with a crazed look in her eye.  Apparently she was given the task of running ALL the classes abt 2 weeks prior and she has no idea what she's doing.   Yes they still need a teacher.  Yes they are interested in me.

I get the job and set up a schedule.  Meanwhile they have yet to see how I knit.

YAY!  More kibble for us!

(btw this was all during an open house to showcase the upcoming classes.  The quilter had a sample of an Ohio Star block.  NONE of the points matched.  Not even close.  If you are going to teach a class on quilting, dont you think your points should match?!?!)

My first class was in May.  I have three students sign up.  Two walk in with yarn but nothing else because when they signed up they were told everything else would be provided.  The third walked in with nothing because she was told EVERYTHING would be provide.  She also told me that she is a lefty and cant learn to knit.  I will never be able to teach her.

I dont believe it!

Guess what?  I couldnt teach her to knit.  When a person decides that they wont be able to do something, it ends up being that way.  She ended up leaving in tears.  She spoke to the manager and told her that I tried all I could to get her to learn but she is a lefty and cant learn to knit as a right hander.  (side note: I have a friend who is a lefty and knits like the rest of us)

Thank goodness the other two ladies picked it up or else I would have felt horrible.  We had such a good time after Debbie Downer left, and they were ready to tackle a real project by the time the class was over.

My next class was this past Saturday.  This time it was 2 little girls, a 7 y/o and a 10 y/o.    There was a discrepancy with what I was supposed to teach (I was told I was the teacher, do what I want!) and they didnt bring anything either.   However nobody ended up in tears, and two little girls AND a mom learned to knit!!

No supplies in THIS basket.

Cons abt this knitting gig:    There is a lack of comunication between corporate and the local store.  There is a lack of communication between management and employees within the local store.  The classes are a great idea in theory but reality is a whole nuther ballgame.

Pros abt this knitting gig:  the people.  Other than the woman who left crying, these people I'm teaching are great.  We have SO much fun and it's really cool to see them go from holding the needles wrong to having a piece of knitted fabric in a couple of hours.  Including the little kids.

Another con is the money.  I get paid minimum wage.  But it's money that will go toward a band fee or a theatre ticket.  And I get a teaching card that gives me 15% off my purchases.

So I will keep teaching as classes pop up.  For now........
